Tom Baker Has Faith in Peter Capaldi!

Kasterborous recently – I mean, really recently – caught up with Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, to chat about his time on the show… and beyond.

With a new Doctor waiting in the wings, Tom was asked if he had any advice for Peter Capaldi, and responded with a vote of confidence:

“I don’t have any advice for anyone. Not for anyone; certainly not someone who’s going to be playing Doctor Who. He’s a very accomplished actor; I’ve seen him do those mean things, you know, swearing into his mobile.

Nobody has ever failed have they? Nobody has ever failed, so there you are. He’s going to be alright.”

Tom agrees with us Whovians: all the Doctors are amazing! He’s only the latest in a long line of stars praising the Twelfth Doctor actor, who is expected to debut in the Autumn.

The 80 year old star (can you believe he’s 80?!) was promoting the launch of Doctor Who on the Horror Channel, beginning this Friday. We’ll have that full interview for you very soon…

How true Tom’s words are: ‘Nobody has ever failed’. They really haven’t! Each and every one has been let down by certain things on occasion like scripts or poor direction/design/lighting. A few may have on a couple of occasions had their time cruelly curtailed by outside forces outside of their control (an unfounded hiatus, an unfounded cancellation just when the show was heading, surely, for it’s next inevitable ‘golden age’ or failure of an unfounded and ill-advised American continuation).

The point being that all 11 actors (so far) have never failed as the CHARACTER. Anybody that is even remotely familiar with Capaldi’s extensive past (and varied) work will know that our beloved show and Time Lord are in the safest hands possible as far as the actor is concerned. He will not fail in his characterisation. Whether the scripts, direction etc do him justice – we will just have to wait and see. But I guarantee his performance will blow us away immediately.

On a side note: If the 13-year-old girls that complain about not liking him (before even giving him a chance) because he is ‘too old’ and ‘not sexy’ stop watching then so be it. It’s their loss and they obviously weren’t watching for the right reasons in the first place.

Surely if we’re talking actors who’ve played The Doctor we shouldn’t forget John Hurt or Peter Cushing in that number, maybe Richard Hurndall too although personally I don’t see him as a Doctor in the conventional sense because he was channeling another actors interpretation due to that actors unavoidable absence.

As Franco noted, I have no worries about Capaldi. It’s the ability of the writers to give him the material he deserves that worries me.

Got to love it that what sells Peter Capaldi to Tom Baker is that he swore into his cellphone. *chuckles* Oh Tom.
