National Television Awards Nominations

It’s January so it must be National Television Awards nominations time and once again there’s Doctor Who interest in several categories.

The show is up for best drama along with Call The Midwife, Downton Abbey and Chris Chibnall’s much praised Broadchurch.

Outgoing Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith is in the running for Best Drama Performance (now a unified category for male and female actors) along with Snakedance‘s Martin Clunes for Doc Martin, Miranda Hart for Call The Midwife and Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey.

Surprisingly there’s no nod in the Drama Performance category for Broadchurch pairing David Tennant and Olivia Colman who’ll have to content themselves by going up for the TV Detective award against Suranne Jones for Scott and Bailey, Bradley Walsh for Law & Order UK, Idris Elba for Luther and (strangely, as there were no new episodes last year) and Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock.

Votes can be submitted online and the awards will be dished out live on ITV1 on 22nd January 2014.

has watched Doctor Who since those great big spiders did for Jon Pertwee, and it's way too late to stop now. When he's not at his job working for a charity in Hull he spends his time following Hull City's fortunes, listening to Bruce Springsteen and wondering why it took thirty years too long for Doctor Who action figures to come along. Favourite stories include the one with the mummies, the one with Mr Sin and the one with the Mona Lisa. Currently listening to: Tom Baker at 80 (Big Finish interview). Reminiscences, religion, tall stories - it's all there. Great stuff.
