No Announcement On New Doctor Who Star Until September?

Big news on the announcement of the casting of the Twelfth Doctor is coming our way… but not until September – probably.

Reports indicate that the BBC will not be announcing the name of the actor involved until early autumn and that the filming of the 2013 Doctor Who Christmas special, followed by a full new series, will not take place until August or September2013.

Apparently, although the BBC wanted to start filming the Eleventh Doctor’s last hurrah in July, plans have been pushed back a bit which means that casting announcements have too

The official line continues to be that Matt Smith has not filmed his last scenes in the TARDIS as yet, despite what some have been suggesting (um, you mean us, right? – Ed) after his recent goodbye video.

What it doesn’t confirm, intriguingly enough, is that the role of the Twelfth Doctor hasn’t been cast; all that we’re offered is that the announcement has been delayed.

Moffat and his team always love to put a few red herrings out there for the public to dissect but could it be that the actor to take over from Matt Smith has already been cast and is waiting in the shadows to take over the role as Gallifrey’s most infamous child?

Thanks for the update. I still say they know who it is and they’ve known for a while now. I hope Matt still gets one last hurrah in a special but I think there will be at least 4 Doctors in the anniversary show. Tennant, Smith, Hurt and the new Guy.

Good! I would like it to be a mystery for as long as possible.

No, no, no. Please BBC, announce it sooner than September. I can’t take all this caginess and meanwhile the British papers will continue to throw out ridiculous names. Argh.

The filming delay was imminent once Jenna Coleman was cast in the Death Comes to Pemberley miniseries. Sounds like Matt is still filming the Ryan Gosling film too, and he needs time to grow his hair out a bit. I don’t see anything sinister in this. Matt Smith himself was quoted at one point as saying production of Series 8 might not begin until 2014, so a late filming for the Christmas special makes sense too.

It’s looking more and more likely that the regeneration will be the cliffhanger at the end of the 50th Special and that Doctor 12 will feature prominently in the Christmas Special.

I remember when they interviewed Matt Smith during that special show they did to announce him as the new Doctor he talked about the peroid when he knew he’d got the job but it was yet to be made public. He said it was great and he was walking around London and as he passed people justing thinking to himself “I’m the Doctor!” and loving tne fact that only he knew! Who knows, maybe the new Doctor is walking around right now thinking the same thing.

I would imagine the casting has been done, and the waiting actor is now using the next few months to prepare and get up to speed with the show and everything about it.

If we really cannot wait two months to find out, we need an irresponsible so-and-so who is in the know to threaten to leak the name. This might prompt a more premature press release from the BBC. To quote Miranda Richardson in Blackadder, however, “Know you of such a person?”

  9. avatar AndrewM says:

I don’t want it to be leaked. I want either the new Doctor to burst into life with no one still knowing who it is going to be or for there to be another special programme which introduces the new Doctor just like they did with Matt Smith. Surely it’d be spoilt any other way.

I would imagine they’d do a special program to announce it. Its nice to imagine they could keep it secret til the last moment, but naive considering how much news has leaked out in the past. Unless they regeneration scene is filmed entirely in studio and under tight secrecy, I don’t think it can remain out of the news. Plus, if it does turn out that Matt regenerates at the end of the 50th and the Christmas special is out first taste of the new Doctor, they wouldn’t be able to keep that filming out of the news either.
