Davison Doubts Classic Doctor Anniversary Involvement

Have you been looking forward to a mini Time Crash reunion as part of the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special? If so, you might be disappointed as Peter Davison doesn’t expect to be invited…

Peter Davison and David Tennant as the Fifth and Tenth Doctors

Speaking at an event in February, Davison revealed that he doesn’t “know very much”.

I know that Steven Moffat will have something planned. I don’t think it will involve the older Doctors, certainly in their present form, because of course we’re meant to look exactly as we did when we left the TARDIS and none of us really do. Some of us are not here any more and others of us have weathered less well than others. I don’t know where I’d put myself in that category. I’m not going to make that decision.

Oh dear. But it’s not all bad news. The Fifth Doctor actor has certainly got his own ideas about how his likeness might appear.

I think we’ll be featured somewhere but I should think it’s probably footage lifted from older Doctor stories. I don’t know. We are doing some Big Finish audios. I know that there are events planned by the BBC. I’ve got a meeting with the head of BBC Wales when I get back to go through various things the BBC have got planned. I don’t think she’s going to offer me a part in it… I might be wrong.

We think that this is a shame, but at least Peter is being in many ways realistic. What’s more it seems as though he has a back up plan…

I decided that if we weren’t going to be involved that I would get together with Colin [Baker] and Sylvester [McCoy] and make our own little special… If we can possible manage it, we’re going to get into the 50th anniversary special whether we’re invited or not!

You know, a little part of me is hoping we get that…

A lot of fans seem to be saying they’ll be disgusted if previous Doctors don’t return, but I don’t get it. The Doctor is already in the show. Having him meet himself is not really very interesting and might be so self-conscious it hobbles the narrative (as it always has before, except in the short and sweet Time Crash). Bringing companions and enemies back, or picking up old storylines, could spark a great story, but parading old Doctors seems contrived. They can get together on a chat show or in a documentary. They don’t need to be in the story itself, and unless Moffat has a really, really good idea, it might be best if they’re not.

I’d love to see them in something special but kind of agree with you.

    Just had a thought though!

What if COO is somehow linking to previous incarnations of the Doctor?

She first appeared against the Daleks against whom the first spent plenty of time battling.

She next appeared with the Great Intelligence who challenged the second Doctor.

There are certainly Ice Warriors to feature later in the series, so what if upcoming episodes feature a bit more linking to former foes?

Could a new Master appear or the Black Guardian or even the Rani? There’s little out there other than images and loose information about the stories. Perhaps even bigger secrets are being kept about 7b than the anniversary.

I doubt it though as I am hopeful that the anniversary episode(s) are something separate from a series. Hopefully one story in multiple parts or even a mini-trilogy (OK 3 is not 3 if smaller, but 3 linked single episode stories is less than 3 linked multi episode stories ;)).

Before I frazzle my brain and yours any further, I think I need some rest!

I’m sure we will get some involvement from Docs 4-8 in mini episodes like Time Crash or at least given cameos in the special, with 9 to 11 being the main focus. First and foremost Matt Smith should be the main star and save the day.

I can’t see why the past Doctor’s aging is an obstacle…..Moffat could always slot in a ‘they only look older because of the time differential’ or only the Doctor sees them as aged because they are taken out of time…as does the audience.

Of course, for Paul McGann this isn’t a problem anyway as we never saw him leave….so let’s get some more 8th Doctor action.

If we aren’t having a multi doctor story Is it too much to want an Eighth Doctor time war mini series (or film?!) where he regenerates into Eccleston at the end….please…..I don’t want to have to wait 20 years for Big Finish to do it on audio! Carpe diem Moffat!!!!
