Australia vs NZ Gets Personal

We discussed earlier this week the recent bid by Australian MP Member for Dawson George Christensen to bring Doctor Who to Australia for the 50th anniversary of the first screening down under, in 2015.

This came days after it was reported that Matt Smith was keen to work with Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit) in New Zealand. We wondered in our article New Zealand vs Australia? if the old rivalry between the two countries looked set to open up on a new front.

Looks like we were right…

Says Mr Christensen:

It appears our friends across the ditch fancy themselves as potential hosts for the Doctor too. This is shaping up to be the Bledisloe Cup for sci-fi geeks.

I’m pretty sure the production team would prefer to spend some time in the gorgeous sunny Whitsundays over the wind, rain and snow of the South Island.

While Australia offers a fearful range of foes, such as cybercrocs, killer kangaroos and drop bears, the best New Zealand can muster are frightened sheep and a bird whose special power is an inability to fly.

Christensen reports that hundreds have joined the campaign’s Facebook page, and there are 400 signatures in the online petition – head to www.doctorwhodownunder.com.au for more information.
