Matt Smith: ‘New Companions Redefine the Doctor’

With a new companion comes fresh perspective and for Matt Smith that means reevaluating his role as the Doctor.

Speaking to Heat Matt Smith said Jenna-Louise Coleman’s character will ‘redefine’ how he approaches the role of the Doctor when she makes her debut in this year’s Christmas Special.

Asked how the departure of Amy and Rory half way through Season Seven would change the Doctor, Matt said:

“That’s something I’m trying to explore in the playing of him at the moment…I think a new companion coming in changes who he is, so hopefully there’ll be some kind of fruits in that relationship redefining him a little.”

Karen Gillan added:
“I think the Doctor’s going to be sad to see the Ponds leave, but he’s also going to carry on, because that’s what he’s done for the past 50 years, essentially.”

Matt also praise how well new arrival Coleman is settling in to the Doctor Who fold:
“She’s doing brilliantly. She’s actually doing night shoots as we speak, poor thing.”

Doctor Who returns this Saturday with Asylum of the Daleks at 19:20 on BBC One and BBC HD, and 9/8c on BBC America.

Everyone has a favourite Doctor and mine - just for his honesty, his fairness and his ability to not notice the Master's awful, awful disguises/anagrams (Sir Gilles Estram!?!) - has to be the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison. The stories didn’t serve him as well as his acting served those stories.
