So while Mr Moffat has confirmed that River Song will be back for the seventh series of Doctor Who, it’s not going to be big news for all of you that have seen the murky photos of Alex Kingston taken from fans whilst they watched the filming taking place.
But the big question is “what will she do this time?” As her story arc was wrapped up pretty neatly in Series 6, from here we can only really expect the odd story here and there about some of River’s other days…or nights.
The clever Moff might be enlarging on the premise of some of River’s night time journeys with the Doctor that we’re seldom let see for her latest episode. Hopefully this will be enriching some of the short night time events that we saw take place on the series 6 DVD box set (which if you haven’t seen by now, we strongly recommend you do) when the Doctor would take River for some fantastic trips in the TARDIS when Amy and Rory where asleep or elsewhere.
Then again, he might not…
‘I don’t know if we’d be allowed to! Heaven knows, I think it’s important that characters keep secrets from their writers, and the Doctor has not given us the information about what happens on those nights.
‘He’s a gentlemen. Gentlemen never tell.’
There’s a great potential to do something wonderful with this expanded idea and could tie in wonderfully with the departure of the Ponds this year.
Whether we get to see a night time encounter or whether it ends up becoming a passing reference in her episode, it’ll be nice to see River Song back for another adventure!
Doctor Who returns very soon to BBC One.
