Torchwood: Miracle Day wasn’t as well received as Children of Earth. That seems to be the consensus amongst the general viewing public.
Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper stand around doing nothing during a global catastrophe…
But Miracle (in this contributor’s opinion) was a brilliant and innovative concept, fleshed out over 10 weeks with some beautiful acting, wonderful direction, excellent action scenes and fantastic script writing. It’s something to be very proud of and that’s exactly how Jane Espenson, who wrote an episode herself, feels.
The writer told The Hollywood Reporter that she was “very proud” of Torchwood’s last run and that the work turned out “amazingly well”. Never one to blow her own trumpet too much however, she quickly name checked the last series of Torchwood in a comparison:
“I don’t think you can ever beat Children of Earth…. which was an absolute masterwork”.
At least she can leave her ego at the door, which is more than can be said for some! Espenson, who wrote some of the very best episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was involved with the writing of 5 episodes of Miracle Day. Her unique style and quirky dialogue gave the last series of Torchwood a new feel and helped to take the show in a different direction.
Do you hope that if there is ever another series of Torchwood, she will come back on board to write a few more episodes? Or would you rather that she stayed away?

She’s right, even if it does come back one day it’s going to be incredibly hard (or impossible) to top Children Of Earth. Perhaps Miracle day would have faired better had been condensed into a 5-part story arc as opposed to the pad-filled 10 it ended up being. Oswald Danes was a masterstroke though. Superbly acted and perhaps the creepiest creation to come out of the whole Torchwood saga thus far. A lot more sinister than some ‘bad alien-of-the-week’!
