Matt Staying Put?

Appearing on this week’s Graham Norton Show – to be aired on Friday evening – Doctor Who star Matt Smith told the Irish comedian that he doesn’t have any plans to leave the series any time soon.

Despite being sad about the departure of Karen Gillan, Smith was philosophical, noting:

“I’ll miss Karen because she’s my best mate. She’s mad as a box of cats but she’s a firecracker!”

However on the matter of his own future on the show, Matt noted that although one day he would have to leave, there doesn’t seem to be any sign of that happening soon…

“There comes a time when a story reaches its conclusion and the essence of the show is that it constantly reinvents itself. I am very happy to stay. I love it and love making the show.”

It seems that actors playing the Doctor are constantly being tasked with answering questions about their future. Isn’t it time the questions were put to one side for a while?

As a US Who fan for over 30 years I can say that the show has never been bigger over here than now… And much of that is due to Matt Smith. It is growing and growing by word of mouth. It was the number one dowloaded.series of 2011 on the US iTunes… (It even beet Glee in the US!) BBC America gets over a mlion viewers… And the box set is a big seller over here. Plus Netflix as well. Lots of high school kids are into it. It is the hip, cool.show for them to be into. Amazing!

Here in Chicago, the height of DW fan fever was in 1983 when we had the big 20th anniversary con with Troughton, Pertwee, Baker and Davison all in attendance and the house was packed with ten of thousands with even more turned away at the door, the crowd was so huge. But now, I think Who-fever is possibly the highest it’s been across the nation. I just hope it keeps growing.

I remember those days from afar… I grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I was up in Chicago this year prior to season 6… I took the train from the airport to my hotel downtown… Doctor Who billboards along the way!!! I bet even in 1983 they didn’t have that! : )

    Never mind all that!

Whats the deal with Gillian Anderson’s accent in that clip?

I mean I know she has lived in the UK for a few years now but my wife’s American and she’s lived here for 16 years now and you can still tell where she is from!

Gillian Anderson was born in the U.S., but spent much of her early formative years growing up in England. Google her official website for further details.

I love the bit where Matt Smith says,”Who’s that?” while looking at the picture on his iPhone. Doesn’t he know anything? It’s Dodo!
