They said it couldn’t happen. They hated his coat. Some dismissed his acting ability, while others decried the quality of his scripts.
Yet here he is, Sixth Doctor Colin Baker, the new president of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society!
Following the sad loss earlier this year of the great Nicholas Courtney, DWAS have been in need of a new president, and they have made absolutely the right choice in appointing Colin Baker to the position.
Colin tweeted that he is pleased to represent the Doctor Who Appreciation Society:
“Was voted DWAS president today – following JP (MR Charisma) [Pertwee] and The Brig (MR Wonderful) [Courtney] – greatly honoured and touched. Thanks DWAS!!.”
“To all of you who have tweeted congrats on my DWAS elevation – many thanks. It’s an honour I will wear with pride.”
Let’s get one thing straight right now: Doctor Who in the 1980s was a mixed bag regardless of who was playing the Time Lord. Colin had some duffers, just like Tom, Peter and Sylvester did. This doesn’t mean that he’s a bad actor – he clearly isn’t – but sadly his televised episodes have suffered over the years from a poor reputation.
Thankfully Colin is a smashing chap who enjoys being part of Doctor Who. Over the years he has done an immense service to fandom, and has thankfully built a new reputation as an audio Doctor with Big Finish.
We don’t think anyone else fits the bill quite like Colin, so from the entire Kasterborous team, huge congratulations!
