Tennant’s Babes

While the Eleventh Doctor may be hot footed when it comes to football and the actor who plays him, Matt Smith, a former professional football player, former Tenth Doctor David Tennant has no such interest in the sport.

Which makes his current choice of role even more interesting as he’s playing Manchester United’s former Assistant Manager Jimmy Murphy in the BBC film United - The Busby Babes, written by The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood writer Chris Chibnall.

The story revolves around the “Busby Babes”, the youngest ever football team to win the football league. Tragedy struck however, as the team flew home on a plane from an European Cup game against Red Star Belgrade. After refuelling at Munich, the team’s plane skidded off the runway during an attempt to take off and half off the total 44 passengers were killed. This included United staff, players, crew and supporters and even some journalists as well.

Tennant spoke about playing his upcoming role:

“I am famously not that much of a football fan at all, so when the script arrived I didn’t think that it was going to be for me…however, it really knocked me back and the emotional power of the story is what hooked me…the way I saw it was if it was affecting me, then it’s one that is going to get to everyone.”

BBC film United - The Busby Babes will be broadcast during 2011.
