Italians Are Cool

They’ve got delicious food, a tower that won’t stand up straight, and the honor of having a certain vampire-fish episode recently set there, and now Italians are about to gain the ability to watch Doctor Who!

You heard right – if you’re currently based in Italy, you’ll be able to watch the best show ever made starting later this month on Rai 4!  All five seasons made since 2005 have been acquired, and since the first three have already been beamed through the stars on Italian satellite TV, those same dubs will be used on Rai 4.  Translations for Series 4 and 5, which have never been broadcast on the Mediterranean peninsula in question, are currently in development thanks to BBC Worldwide.

Broadcast dates and times haven’t been confirmed yet, but we do know that it will be January (the month we’re in now, in case you had a really bad New Year’s hangover) thanks to Rai 4′s Facebook page, where the announcement of the impending first-month-of-the-year broadcast was made followed by a slew of Italian Whovians shouting “GRAZIE!”  I’m not fluent in Italian but I think that’s supposed to show Rai 4 their much-deserved appreciation.  Or it’s a warning to the channel to stay away from their carnivorous lawns.
