According to BeehiveCity.com, ITV are considering a remake (at last!) of Sapphire & Steel, the cult, time distorted adventure series from the late 1970s and early 1980s – and there is speculation linking Billie Piper to the title role.
Originally starring Joanna Lumley as Sapphire and David McCallum as Steel, the concept of the show was, roughly, “somethings gone wrong with time, we need the elemts of Sapphire and Steel to fix it” – the lead parts are effectively the personification of the elements. The result of this is that Sapphire is sparkly and glamourous, while Steel is cool and strong (see here for a far more in-depth summary). The original series was created by PJ Hammond, whose more recent work includes an episode of Torchwood Series 2 (Small Worlds) and a Doctor Who adventure for Big Finish. Interesting Sapphire & Steel itself has been resurrected on Big Finish already, with Susannah Harker and David Warner in the title roles.
Whether Piper would be interested in another science fiction series with a cult following is of course up to her – but of particular interest is speculation also linking a certain David Tennant to the role of Steel…
I can see ITV being particularly interested in that pairing.
