Chibnall on Sea Devils

There is a great interview on SFX at the moment with The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood writer Chris Chibnall, in which he discusses bringing back Doctor Who monsters the Silurians – and the Sea Devils.

Doctor Who - Chris Chibnall wrote The Hungry Earth/Cold BloodIt seems that although the Sea Devils (from the 1972 story of the same name) were considered briefly for the story, the focus had to remain on their earthbound/subterranean cousins.

I think the story is so clearly about the Silurians and what the Silurians want that it’s nice to have a real kind of singularity of purpose to the story. You want to do one race of monsters as well as you can, and you want to spend your money on that.

But I’d love to see the Sea Devils come back. I did say, “Should we put them in, should they be kind of swimming in those pools of lava under the Earth?” but we decided to just do the Silurians.

The question is – would new Sea Devils still be dressed like Hellenic fishermen?

With plenty to read in this interview, its a good way to spend some time while anticipation builds for Cold Blood, which airs on Saturday evening at 7pm on BBC One and BBC HD.
