Matt Smith: New Doctor Who on Scarves

Matt Smith’s interview in Doctor Who Magazine is headline news on the BBC website this morning, as the youngest actor to play Doctor Who is given the treatment of being quizzed by the long running official magazine.

Some further clues emerge from the interview (see yesterday’s news for others) and it seems that Smith is as keen on sartorial elegance as he is enjoying the role and embracing its history.

Smith, who was in Brazil when the announcement was made, said that he would make his Doctor "as varied, brilliant, dark, unpredictable and happy and sad as I can".

"I’m really going to work my socks off in the next few years and do my best to enjoy it as much as I can."

You know how those tabloids and shallow programmes always ask if the Doctor will wear a scarf, or assume that the Doctor actually does in every incarnation?

There’s a very good chance that they’re going to get extremely confused… Matt Smith alludes in the interview to his Doctor’s dress sense:

"I’m a big fan of long coats and rather dashing scarves in everyday life, so who knows?"

A long-term Doctor Who fan, Christian grew up watching the show and has early memories of the Graham Williams era. His favourite stories are Inferno, The Seeds of Doom and Human Nature (although The Empty Child, Blink and Utopia all come close). When he’s not bossing around the news team, Christian is a freelance writer specialising in mobile technology and domestic computing, and enjoys classic rock, cooking and spending time in the countryside with his wife and young children.
