On paper, the idea of publishing emails between a journalist and a Head Writer from a TV series might not seem to be the most exciting theme for a 700-page book. But when the journalist is Benjamin Cook and the writer Russell T Davies then the premise takes on a new exciting life and The Writer’s Tale – The Final Chapter is an astoundingly wonderful release updating the original book with more wondrous tales from the production of Doctor Who.

This expanded paperback edition of the original from 2008 is an honest, witty and hearty book pitched perfectly, not just for fans but for anyone with a mild interest in TV production. We all know Davies is a gifted storyteller but its Cook’s enquiring emails that really do let us behind the scenes of our favourite show.

This is not just a behind-the-scenes book, it goes behind the thoughts of Davies, how the plots evolve, how the casting is sometimes leaked and how much stress in over seeing such a show puts a strain not only on the writer but his relationships both professional and family. And its honesty all the way with Davies, remember its his love for the show that helped bring it back in such a block-busting way so his enthusiasm leads to some incredibly long emails.

Dramatic in parts and at times emotional the book is hard to put down as you’ve just got to read about when Davies met Matt Smith for the first time and how awkward this unplanned meeting was. The anxiety Davies suffered considering his move to LA and thoughts of leaving the show behind forever. The small collection of snaps (some in full colour) is a wonderful indication of the fun that could be had on set.

Anyone who owns the original release will need to get this one too for the extra 300 pages are worthy of the cover price alone. I can’t recommend this release enough. Here’s hoping Cook is in communication now with Steven Moffat and already working on a book on his era.
