The stellar rise of Karen Gillan continues unabated as LA played host to The Guardians of the Galaxy premiere – the latest potential mega-hit from Marvel Studios – where the girl formerly known as Pond stunned onlookers in a sheer purple dress and cute, newly regrown do.
Gillan, who has been taking on the big time with a series of eye-catching roles, plays Nebula, daughter of the death-obsessed, world conqueror Thanos (Josh Brolin) and sister to the green-skinned Gamora (Zoe Saldana), and just so happens to be a blue, bad ass alien-killing machine.
The role presented numerous challenges: not only did she study Spartan history, train for two months and endure hours in the make-up chair as assistants turned her a deeper shade of blue; she also completely shaved her head bald.
It’s that level of commitment to the role that impressed Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige: ”She was willing to shave her head and she not only ended up shaving her head, but at Comic Con last year she came out on the panel in a wig and dramatically revealed it – it was so ballsy and it was so awesome,” he told TV3. “And she did all of her behind-the-scenes interviews completely bald and she is beautiful with hair and without hair, so it was really, really cool that she was willing to do that.”
In fact, it’s the first question put to her on the red carpet in this clip from Marvel Entertainment; where in the endearingly-geeky Karen discusses everything from the make-up process, meditation, and Nebula’s ‘interesting’ relationship with Gamora.
With all this attention from the glitterati, it’s humbling to hear that Gillan is still as a down to Earth as ever – she even went to In & Out burger after the premiere! And then Tweeted about it!
As if appearing in summer super smashes and mingling with the A- List wasn’t enough, Gillan can also be seen in the latest trailer for the third series of Charlie Brooker’s spoof cop show – A Touch of Cloth reports Wales Online.
The show, which sees John Hannah play the grizzled, damaged cop Jack Cloth solving outlandish crimes in a hilarious Naked Gun style romp through cop drama clichés, sees Gillan join the team as Kerry Newblood – a rookie totally unprepared for random Gorilla attacks.
You can watch the trailer above – A Touch of Cloth returns to Sky 1 on the 8th August.
