New Doctor Who Star Peter Capaldi Hits Radio Times Cover

In this week’s Radio Times, Steven Moffat recalls writing The Day of the Doctor, revealing it was the most “difficult” and “terrifying” thing he has ever written and reveals why he chose Peter Capaldi to be the new Doctor.

Writer and executive producer Steven Moffat reveals:

When you choose a Doctor, you want somebody who is utterly compelling, attractive in a very odd way. None of the Doctors are conventionally attractive, but they’re all arresting. Handsome men don’t quite suit. Matt Smith’s a young, good-looking bloke from one angle but is actually the strangest looking man from another. You need that oddity; you need somebody who is carved out of solid star, really. Doctor Who is a whopping great star vehicle, despite the fact it changes star every so often.

  1. man, maybe there is something I don’t understand here, but it seems limke they cna’t stop promoting Mister Capaldi? To my suspicious scorpio rising mind, there’ something Whoovy in Whoville.

;) I cannot WAIT for the new season.

I’m hoping they’re promoting him because he’s sticking around for a good while! Everything Moffat seems to be saying is pretty much exactly what I’d be wanting to hear, but I hope he’s ready for the backlash from certain sections of society for suggesting Tennant and Smith in particular aren’t perfection in human form :-)

For what it’s worth, I agree with him – whatever conventionally attractive is, the Doctor shouldn’t be it. He should be distinctive, and he should have presence. A chisel-jawed, smooth-faced Hollywood leading man type just wouldn’t cut it for me!
