Whoniverse Con Cancelled As Matt Smith Forced To Withdraw

The Hub Productions has announced that the Australian Whoniverse event has been cancelled after Matt Smith was forced to withdraw. This comes after Karen Gillan withdrew from the event – which takes place at several locations around the country – last week.

As reported on their website:

We have received devastating news in the last 24 hours. Due to a personal emergency, Matt Smith has advised us he is no longer able to come to Australia at this time. We’ve looked into any and all options with regards to replacements, but unfortunately the only possible replacement we would consider sufficient would be another modern Doctor, and there are none available over these coming weeks. With Karen also unable to attend the second weekend, we feel we have no choice but to cancel the event. We are working to try to bring Matt, Karen and Arthur to future events, but in the meantime, Ticketek will be in touch regarding refunds.

Matt has provided us with the following statement at this time:

I am deeply saddened to have to advise that I will not be able to come to Australia for the Hub Productions’ Whoniverse event. Although I wish it were otherwise, due to a personal family emergency it’s not possible for me to leave England at this time. I truly regret the situation, and the disappointment it must be causing, but I’m hoping to be able to reschedule as soon as possible for the future; I look forward to see you all then.

We understand that many of you will be shattered by this news; please understand that as long-term Doctor Who fans ourselves, we are no less heartbroken.

As noted, Ticketek will be contacting all ticketholders directly in regards to refunds, and if any action is required on your part to obtain your refund. If you have any inquiries regarding your tickets in the meantime, you can contact Ticketek on 13 28 39.

There is no doubt going to be a lot of disappointment. Matt clearly has good reasons for pulling out. But spare a thought for Liam Flanagan.

I don’t think a lot of people are going to be upset that the even is canceled. I think more people are probably concerned as to what’s going on with Matt and his family. I know I am at least…

When an event you have been looking forward to is cancelled, that’s sad and disappointing, but hardly “devastating.” We should all be more concerned with what is happening with Matt and his family and sending good thoughts, prayers, whatever, their way.

  2. avatar DonnaM says:

Good wishes to Matt and his family at what must be a very difficult time. He doesn’t strike me as the kind of chap who’d back out of something like this unless it was absolutely necessary.

    • avatar michael boon says:

He’s not. He’s always been a wonderful ambassador for the show and can take it has a ‘given’ that he had no choice. Here’s hoping that whatever the situation is, it resolves itself in a positive way.

THIS EVENT WAS DOOMED FROM THE START. THE WEB SITE LOOKED DODGY , THE COMPANY HAD REPUTATION FOR STUFF UPS, AND THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS WERE TOTALLY ONE SIDED. AND AS PREDICTED BY MANY ,IT IS NOW A NON-EVENT…………
IT WAS ONLY WHEN TICKETEK GOT ON BOARD DID I FEEL COMFORTABLE BUYING A TICKET, A GOLD PACKAGE $950 FRONT ROW SEAT FOR MY DAUGHTER. WE WERE COMING FROM THE GOLD COAST TO MELBOURNE FOR THIS EVENT. NOW SHES DEVASTATED AND IM OUT OF POCKET OVER $2000. IVE CONTACTED THE ACCC , AND LEFT A FEW NASTY EMAILS / PHONE MESSAGES WITH (DUD) PRODUCTIONS. THE QUESTION IS CAN I PROVE THAT THEY HAD NO INTENTION OF PRODUCING THE GOODS…………PROBABLY NOT. I BELIEVE THEY HAD THEIR AMBITIONS MIXED UP WITH THEIR CAPABILITIES AND WERE INCOMPETENT AND HAD ABSOLUTE SHIT ORGANIZATION SKILLS…………….

    • Good of you to leave your real name when making such assertions, CGHTRHRTHRTJ

    • They said that they’d refund your money. Now that you’ve called and been an absolute jerk to everyone involved, multiple times, I’m sure your refund has gone to the bottom of their list. Maybe you should understand that celebrities are human beings, and they have lives outside of what goes on in public. Something dreadful could have happened, I’m sure he didn’t just catch a cold and decide to bail. As for the website looking dodgy and you being uncomfortable about it the entire time, if you felt that way in the first place, then no matter who ended up helping out with the event, you should have decided against going. You aren’t out of pocket, you are waiting on a refund. Also, typing in all caps is childish.

        “absolute jerk”…………JUST VENTING
“multiple times”…………TWICE, JUST STATING THE FACTS……..
“I’m sure your refund has gone to the bottom of their list”…………HUB DON’T REFUND………..TICKETEK DO……….I GOT IT ON FRIDAY……….
“being uncomfortable about it the entire time”……………WTF, IF I WAS UNCOMFORTABLE THE ENTIRE TIME I WOULDN’T HAVE BOUGHT A TICKET.I TRUSTED TICKETEK , NOT HUB…………

        “You aren’t out of pocket”…………YES I AM. AIRFARES, ACCOMMODATION ,CAR-HIRE. OBVIOUSLY I KNEW I WAS GETTING A TICKET REFUND………..

“typing in all caps is childish”……….. NO , SAYING YOU HAVE CATERPILLARS FOR EYEBROWS IS CHILDISH………..

        • Not even bothered. You’ve just gone ahead and showed how silly you are twice now. I pity your daughter for having an infant pretending to be a parent.

    • Matt had a personal emergency as in possibly a close relative injured, dying or dead, there is no way any one could have predicted this, not you or me or the HUB.

Conventions/this style of event are prone to cancellations of guests due to personal or work commitments and getting Arthur, Karen and Matt in at the same time is a big task and there were risks.

Are you seriously that arrogant and expect Matt and the others to drop their work and personal lives?

Tickets are being refunded, surely there is enough time to cancel flights and bookings? going to ACCC is a waste of their time and our tax dollars because of your feelings, and seriously what good of an outcome do you expect abusing the Hub? are they magically going to force Matt to come back out here because some one got cross at them?

In conclusion grow up, set a good example for your child and stop acting like a kid at a supermarket who isn’t allowed to get that packet of lollies they wanted!

and NO I do not work for or have any affiliation with the event itself, I am a fellow Whovian who is embarrassed to share a fandom with such a vile selfish person such as yourself.

    • avatar Bexa says:

You’re the one who booked the tickets, knowing this might happen. Next time don’t book them if you can’t accept that actors are human beings and might have to cancel. Or do you think they’re robots just for your entertainment. How selfish! Something truly horrible could be happening in his family right now and you’re here banging on about not getting to meet him. Great example to set for your child on how to be a completely heartless, self-involved, jerk. And also how to chuck a tantrum and make nasty phone calls when things don’t go your way. Do everyone a favor and never go to an event like this. Leave it to the real fans who actually care about the actors and know how to act like adults.

  4. avatar Ranger says:

I can understand fans who have brought what appear to very expensive tickets, but I’m sure that Matt would cancel only as a last resort. I hope he and his family are OK.

  5. avatar Shad Gray says:

I’m pretty sure two conventions were killed in this process. I do not remember the name of the other, long standing con in AUS, but I remember reading that they felt the need to cancel all their guests and refund money because they knew that their con would be a bust against Whoniverse Con. They decided it was best to postpone any event this year than to throw one that would fail against Whoniverse’s lineup. Now that Whoniverse is out of commission, I feel gutted for the fans who have had con after con yanked out from them.

  6. Family and personal life take massive priority over fandom!! Take care Matt. Our prayers are with you and your family.

  7. I am so sorry to hear that Matt has family problems, conventions will come and go, but family must come first

  10. While he’s here, I hope he sees that poor little kid he sent a video to. That would be nice. All being said, hope Matt’s personal issues are not too bad.

  11. avatar Sarah Louise Nokes says:
