The TARDIS Goes Steampunk

We’ve seen the TARDIS transformed and imagined in a number of ways beyond its beautiful blue box, from the TARDIS as the Yellow Submarine, to a Transformers robot, to an automobile – including the Catbus and Mrs Frizzle’s Magic schoolbus – to a teapot, and even to a human form! (Hello Sexy!)

Thanks to artist Andrew Colunga, that Blue Box has been given a steampunk makeover, with bras details, wood paneling, and stained glass.

For some reason, I think if the TARDIS had gone through an exterior redesign with the TV Movie, I wonder if it would’ve come out something like this, as it seems fitting with the Eighth Doctor’s Victorian dress.

The artist has also done a version of the console room with hanging lights, comfy looking sofas, and a time rotor that looks a lot like the TARDIS in her human form.

About the Author

Rebecca is new to the Who world, having only recently watched the entire new series in a span of 8 days. She is no stranger to sci-fi though, being a life long Trekkie and has vague memories of seeing the 4th Doctor on US television as a child. When not watching, reading, blogging, or talking about Doctor Who, she is a fan of pop culture and loves movies and books so much she has to keep a list of both so she doesn't forget any of them. She also likes to make attempts at various forms of art including photography and painting. Rebecca is currently working her way through as many classic serials and as many books related to the show that she can find and wishes she could have been with the Doctor and Amy when they met Van Gogh.

Interesting, but the classic Police Box shell must never be messed with. That said, I do love a console room with wood paneling and brass touches. I do loved the one used from Masque of Mandragora to Horror of Fang Rock. They need to bring something like that back in the future.

Not so keen on that one. Garish, cluttered and looks like it’s trying to cram too much in. I reckon this one is better:

And this one is well lush:

    Though no where to sit!

Always had a soft spot for the Shalka steampunk TARDIS – the console especially:

Not sure about a steampunk Tardis but a steampank style wardrobe and controlroom for the Doctor would be cool.

I have always thought that a story or two set in a steampunk style universe would be visually amazing.

I think Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel tried to use elements of this but there is a bar that needs to be set much higher.
