Jenna Tight-Lipped On Doctor Who Series 8

“Taken off like a ROCKET”. If you weren’t aware by now, Doctor Who did rather well in the battle of good versus best at the National Television Awards.

Jenna Coleman was on hand to pick up awards for both Best Drama and on behalf of Matt Smith for best drama performance. The Radio Times caught up with Jenna and tried to squeeze some spoilery nuggets on how Series 8 is going and what it’s like working with Peter Capaldi as her new co-star. Well you would wouldn’t you?

Jenna is delightful as ever but and has been well-trained by the P.R. team – she’s giving nothing away except that the first episode very much carries on immediately where The Time of the Doctor left off and will be dealing with the dynamic between Clara and the perfect stranger that’s just appeared…

The production team get a shout out and we are reliably informed that Capaldi is doing “an amazing job” – as expected. Natch. Jenna is also full of praise for director Ben Wheatley, known for his darkly comic style. Wheatley is directing the first and one further episode in Series 8 having gained recent acclaim for features like the trippy historical, A Field in England and black comedy Sightseers. Take a look at the trailers below – his style is subtle, detailed and dare-I-say, Gritty? But be warned, these offerings are not for the faint-hearted nor the younger viewer!

The combination of Coleman with Capaldi and directors such as Wheatley promise a very new direction for Doctor Who. At the same time we know that old friends, the Paternoster Gang are returning – how different will it be? And speaking of transformations, was Coleman wearing a bow tie at the NTAs?…

She looks nothing like her action figure.

      Fortunately for her!

I’m hoping the return of the Paternoster Gang is short-term; and that the dynamic between Twelve and Clara is more Four and Sarah-Jane than anything other comparable situation! Of course Capaldi will be amazing – the man’s never given a bad performance that I’ve seen – and there’s hope for Jenna getting a real personality to play with on the evidence of the last few episodes.

My only problem with Series 8 so far is that it’s so long before we get to see it!

I don’t mind waiting as long as its worth the wait, and I’m sure it will be great for old and new fans alike. And the less I know about the new series the better the surprise will be. And no gap in the series which is great as I have always thought the story’s have a better flow to them.
