Here’s Peter Capaldi as the Doctor!

Thanks to the BBC we can share this brand new photo of Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman preparing to shoot the new series of Doctor Who.

The first block of episodes of series eight are currently in production, with episode one by Steven Moffat, and episode two by Phil Ford. These episodes are directed by Ben Wheatley, and mark Peter Capaldi’s era as the Doctor.

Arriving on set in Cardiff to begin filming, Peter Capaldi, said:

New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I’m emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.

Steven Moffat added:

First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins.

Controller of Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson said:

Excitement and anticipation fills the air as Peter Capaldi’s Doctor takes control of the TARDIS for the very first time today. It’s going to be one hell of a ride and I can’t wait for the journey to start.

Finally, Charlotte Moore is Controller BBC One:

A new year, a new face, a new Doctor! 2014 has arrived and it’s Peter Capaldi’s time so let the adventures begin!

We couldn’t have put it better. Let’s hope they can begin soon!

Oooh episode 2 by Phil Ford. They sneaked that one out.

Great, Phil wrote the sublime Waters of Mars and some amazing SJA episodes. He’s a guy who knows his beginnings from his middles and ends.

We all happy with that one?

    • avatar FrancoPabloDiablo says:

Phil actually co-wrote The Waters Of Mars with RTD.

      • avatar Mark Lenton says:

Well technically yes, but as has been revealed about the specials, basically they just needed RTD’s name on them to attract the stars (at Julie Gardners request). RTD co-wrote all of his era’s episodes, doing a final ‘polish’ draft on everything that he got (except Moffs we are told). Source for this is Writers Tale Final Chapter. So it was written by Phil Ford and polished by RTD (exactly as Human Nature was written by Paul Cornell and polished by RTD, for example).

So who can I blame for Planet of the Dead?

          • avatar Mark Lenton says:

Well you should Blame Gareth Roberts for writing it and probably RTD too for not correcting it with his ‘polish’.
            :-)

You know, I actually think he pulls off Eleven’s last outfit better than Matt did! Maybe it just looked a bit more “costume” on a younger Doctor?

So Ep 1 takes up straight off the special with no time for a costume change; fair enough (although I still hope he didn’t crash the TARDIS). And I agree with Mark – Phil Ford is definitely a welcome return writer.

It’s all feeling very real now!

  3. avatar TonyS says:

While I liked Matt’s final costume, it did seem, as you say Donna, more of a costume. The “geography teacher” outfit her wore at the start looked more natural on him and I preferred it.

  4. avatar TimeChaser says:

Yes, Capaldi wears it well, but… new outfit shots please! Soon!

A few websites have pointed out that this photo appears to be intentionally posed to be similar to a famous shot of Jon Pertwee and Katy Manning!

It looks a bit “Man at C&A” catalogue to me

(which will go over the heads of anyone not British or under 40!).

  6. avatar Neu 75 says:

Interesting that they’ve decided to film his first story first, rather than later as they did with Smith. That late-Smith costume looks rather good on Capaldi IMO…

Yesterday some websites posted photos of Jenna Coleman in a school uniform, claiming them to be the first Season 8 official pics – despite the fact that they came from Waterloo Road and were several years old!

I also thought that pose reminded me of the one done by Jon pertwee in a still with Liz sladen in the planet of spiders I think it was. He reminds me of pertwee a bit .

  9. avatar Pandaparts says:

Wasn’t Matt wearing the brown overcoat when he regenerated? That doesn’t look identical to the purple outfit Matt wore, either…

Tell us what you think!
