Tasha Lem: Friend Or Foe?

She’s mysteriously “from the Doctor’s past” and is “a descendant of humans”, but who is Tasha Lem? In a recent interview the actress who plays her, Orla Brady (Fringe, Sinbad), tries to explain her character without spoiling the surprises of Christmas.

Although she watched Doctor Who as a child, she had not seen it since. How did Ms. Brady research the storylines, including one in particular?

I asked the script editor to recommend what he thought I should watch, and said ‘I’m happy to watch as much as you like’, and he gave me [laughing] truly a stack of DVDs from my feet up to my shoulder and …I just stayed in and had this Who-fest, where I watched Christopher’s and David’s and Matt’s of course, a lot of Matt’s, because I was catching up on particular story strands.

When asked if those strands dealt with Trezalore, she replied simply, “Yes.”

And Ms. Brady seems to have scenes with both the Doctor and at least one of his enemies:

There were a couple of moments between Tasha and the Doctor that made me laugh out loud, but she’s not a particularly funny character…

I did have a scene with one of the above (Daleks or Cybermen)…when I did stand in front of them I did think ‘ooh, I’m slightly scared and nervous.”

When questioned about the tone of the special episode, she tried not to steer into spoilers:

Several of the writers of the series have managed to weave things together. There’s a very strong spirit of Christmas in this woven together with an element of dread, ending, and what looks like a death. That’s coming up…it has been predicted that this is a death, an ending, and it’s coming down the line pretty rapidly, so there is that element, but also, woven through that dark element is a very beautiful Christmas spirit.

So, Tasha Lem is someone who the Doctor apparently already knows, has something to do with Trenzalore, and may be there as he dies (or regenerates?). That all seems to bring up more questions than it answers–but at least we’ll find out soon when The Time of the Doctor airs on Christmas Day.

If a person rearranges the letters of her name, it’s pretty obvious that Tasha Lem is really “Tame Lash” or “Aha! Melts!” Kasterborites, who do you think she really is?

  1. Makeup reminds me of the Sisterhood of Karn and would fit in nicely with the storyline

  2. TonyS says:

She is a portent of Matt Smith’s most restrained performance as the Eleventh Doctor. She is an anagram of Least Ham!

  3. TimeChaser says:

It also spells out “Mels a Hat”. Not sure if that means anything. :p

  4. TonyS says:

He regenerates into a fez or a Stetson?

    • TimeChaser says:

Which Clara then takes back in time and puts on Caecilius’ head, thereby transferring the Doctor’s mind into him?

  5. TonyS says:

Or is it “late sham”? The Doctor wasn’t the Doctor all the time…

  6. TimeChaser says:

Its could also spell out spell out “Last me. Ha!” Perhaps she is something of a Watcher-type, there to trick all the enemies who think they’re finally killing off the Doctor?

    • I’m with you. ;)

  7. TonyS says:

That’s sort of where I was going with “late sham”. I must admit that your anagram is better than mine :)

  8. TonyS says:

What slightly worries me is the thought that one of these posts may prove to be correct

  9. TonyS says:

    Maybe it’s a Great British Menu cross-over and mean s “stale ham”…

  10. If Tasha Lem is an anagram of something “Le Mastah” seems like a good candidate and if that’s the case it means we won’t be seeing that rubbish beard again. At least not anytime soon.

  11. dr jon says:

She is the doctors next regeneration a walking container which holds the lifeforce of a timelord.

  12. dr jon says:

Or is she the dr’s daughter who give’s up her regenerations for him.

  13. TonyS says:

It’s also an anagram of lash meat. I know that Doctor Who is a family programme. But this IS Steven Moffat we are talking about…

  14. drvwho says:

its a load of crap by the bbc they have all ready shot it all so just wait and see or is it like sherlock he’s not really dead like the robot form of himself???????????????/

    • TimeChaser says:

What was all that? Punctuation is your friend, you know.

And we know its already been shot and in the can, we’re just having fun playing around with this one character’s name to see if we can find any meaning behind it, though I bet there isn’t.

      • TonyS says:

Or if there is, I am fairly sure that it is none of the meanings suggested in this thread.

      • doctorsstoneleg says:

“it’s” should be “it’s” as you are being rumpunctuationacious ;- P

  15. TonyS says:

Purple was a colour that denoted wealth and position in ancient Rome. Maybe the Caecilius link is there after all :)

  16. TonyS says:

    “Ah last me”

  17. TimeChaser says:

If anyone finds a series of photos from the special on Yahoo, be careful. I just stumbled on what looks like a serious spoiler dealing with this Tasha Lem character.
