Doctor Who News Doctor Who: just who is Tom?

New Companion For Twelve?

With The Time of the Doctor quickly approaching, the rumor mill is quickly ramping up it’s output of possibilities and speculations for the future of the Doctor, his companions, and the show in general.

One persistent new rumor is about the possibility of the Doctor gaining a new companion in his journeys through time and space. That companion? A Coal Hill teacher named Tom, who gave Clara the message about the Doctor in the 50th anniversary special.

Twitter user @phesantjumpers asked the actor that played Tom, Tristan Beint, about seeing Tom in the TARDIS, possibly as a love interest for Clara. Beint did nothing to dissuade the speculation, even going along with the “Tomwald” moniker for the possible pairing.

Phesantjumpers also posted to Tumblr, noting that Tom was such a minor character in the episode yet was given a name, and when the message came for Clara from her “doctor,” Tom was concerned for her.

Beint responded to the Tumblr post.

However, in a more recent Twitter post, Beint has tried to downplay the rumors, saying he doesn’t know anything about another appearance for Tom on the show.

Of course, this is all speculation and now what seems an attempt at some misdirection, all of which are common in the Doctor Who fandom universe. But the thought of another companion in the TARDIS, especially a male companion, is an interesting one. After all, there is precedent for the Doctor’s companions being a pair of teachers from the Coal Hill school! Not only that, but his hair style and shirt, tie and blazer colour scheme look very familiar…

About the Author

Rebecca is new to the Who world, having only recently watched the entire new series in a span of 8 days. She is no stranger to sci-fi though, being a life long Trekkie and has vague memories of seeing the 4th Doctor on US television as a child. When not watching, reading, blogging, or talking about Doctor Who, she is a fan of pop culture and loves movies and books so much she has to keep a list of both so she doesn't forget any of them. She also likes to make attempts at various forms of art including photography and painting. Rebecca is currently working her way through as many classic serials and as many books related to the show that she can find and wishes she could have been with the Doctor and Amy when they met Van Gogh.

A second companion? I’m fine with that. Another bloody soapy love interest? No, thank you!

Why can’t a male and female under the age of 40 be allowed to be mere friends? There’s an idea you don’t see promoted much on television any more!

  2. avatar TonyS says:

They shred one scene in The Day of the Doctor. One scene. Zero chemistry. Dr Who fans do like to read things into nothing!

  3. Well why not? Pair Tom and Clara up with Capaldi’s Doctor, throw in a “Susan” surrogate and we’re back to where we started!

    • Hell, why not bring Carole Ann Ford back all together?

I mean, Gallifrey survived, so that must mean Susan lived as well!

I have to say the character barely made an impression in the episode and wouldn’t make for a promising companion, particularly with Jenna Coleman firing on all cylinders as she was in Day Of The Doctor.

I’d rather see Ingrid Oliver join the Tardis.

Actually, so would I. But not for very long. I think the character shows promise but needs work.

Rumours, rumours…I would like an additional companion. A good friend, not a love interest. We can watch that elsewhere and it’s boring. But why this one? It wasn’t until the rumour mill started that I even noticed the guy. Oh well. We’ll see!

  7. avatar Spaceman13666 says:

Interestingly, on his agents CV there is no mention of his appearance in Who, what so ever…
Make of that what you will.
If he is to join, I hope he’s not going to be a another dippy bloke that finds his way ala Mickey and Rory… They’ve used that male companion stereo type up, now.

Lets have a man of courage and action straight off like Ian, Jamie or Harry..

And that wasn’t a dig at those characters or actors, they’ve been enjoyable, just that character formula is running a bit tired now

Actually, I’d rather see Ingrid Oliver come back as Osgood. I watched DOTD again and I realized she’s pretty much the ideal companion. Even better would be the ZYGON version of Osgood – she could be a live-action Frobisher!

I want Clara to be with the Doctor by herself for awhile–she’s barely gotten to know 11 and now he’s turning into the new guy! I also don’t think three companions work very well with the 45 minute episodes–people will hate me saying this, but lots of times Rory had nothing to do. Nothing. Two is better than three, well, in this case.

They need a third companion, badly. Maybe someone who’s a bit naive and insecure, to balance out the massive Sue that Clara turned out to be.
