Moffat: Peter Capaldi “incredibly excited” to Audition

An intriguing snippet of background information on Peter Capaldi’s casting as the next Doctor has emerged in a new interview with Steven Moffat.

The showrunner had already revealed that Capaldi was the only person to audition for the role, but Moffat now says that the star wasn’t told he was the only one up for the part.

He’s a huge fan of Doctor Who, so we asked and he was incredibly excited to come and audition.
We didn’t tell him that he was the only person auditioning because that would be oddly pressuring.

Moffat goes on to say what a decent sort the programme’s new lead is:

Nobody has a bad thing to say about him and that’s not a minor issue when it comes to casting a Doctor.

What do you think? Could Capaldi have handled the truth?

About the Author

has watched Doctor Who since those great big spiders did for Jon Pertwee, and it's way too late to stop now. When he's not at his job working for a charity in Hull he spends his time following Hull City's fortunes, listening to Bruce Springsteen and wondering why it took thirty years too long for Doctor Who action figures to come along. Favourite stories include the one with the mummies, the one with Mr Sin and the one with the Mona Lisa. Currently listening to: Tom Baker at 80 (Big Finish interview). Reminiscences, religion, tall stories - it's all there. Great stuff.

Capaldi is going to be Amazing, the reaction his very brief cameo in The Day of the Doctor proves that the Fanbase cannot wait to see him in the role.

I think he’ll be great, as was Matt. Only personal reservation, I wish we had a new showrunner for a new era…

Considering that effectively “You’re the only person we’re actually seeing” would mean “the part’s yours unless you totally stuff this up”… well yes, that probably would be piling on some pressure, Mr Moffat!

It must be very flattering to find out after, but beforehand… maybe it was kinder not to mention the fact!

I’m really looking forward to seeing what he does with the part.

Lovely bit in the new DWM where Mark Gatiss mentions that he was talking to Capaldi while the latter visited the set of “An Adventure…” and Capaldi said he’d always wanted to play the Doctor but thought that, now, the chance had passed him by! Then, just a few weeks later…

I am really looking forward to his era.
