Jenny Colgan’s Favourite Doctor: David Tennant

This past weekend the Sunday Express gathered four of the countries leading literary lights and asked one question of Earth shattering importance: Who is your favorite Doctor?

Well, one of those four was one of our own, certified Whovian Jenny Colgan (AKA JT Colgan, author of the novel Dark Horizons) made her case for her favorite in the form of David Tennant.

He combined everything you already loved about the Doctor – his wit, his brains, his joie de vivre and usefulness in a tight spot – and added the cherries on the top: dashing black eyes, a heart-melting grin and really, really good hair.

Jenny’s case covers the fact that Number Ten was the Doctor who really broke the pattern for anything other than friendship in the TARDIS when it came to companions (Paul McGann and that kiss not withstanding)

They tried to play down his instant chemistry with Billie Piper, but it simply could not be denied. She fancied him because you fancied him, your mum fancied him, your granny fancied him, everybody fancied him.

Now, I can hear a million fans screaming that isn’t a legitimate reason for a favorite Doctor, that there is more to it than being cute, and fear not, Jenny agrees with that too.

But there’s another reason Tennant is my favourite Doctor, which is that he starred in some of the greatest episodes there have ever been of Doctor Who, or in fact any television series.

Quite frankly I find that a hard point to argue with. Personally I think that there has yet to be a story to top Midnight, and as such I find that while David isn’t my all time favorite Doctor (an honour that is currently held by Doctor number two- though it does vary from month to month) he is my favorite modern era Doctor, though I refuse to comment on whether his hair has anything to do with that…. well okay, maybe a little bit.

But what do you fine folks feel? It Ten the tops or do you feel that there has been a massive miscarriage of justice here? Leave us a comment below and let us know your number one.

  1. Not only MIdnight, but also Human Nature/Family of Blood, The
Girl in the Fireplace, The Waters of Mars, and on and on. David brought a perfect mixture of lighthearted and dark Doctor. He also had the most emotional range of any Doctor before or since. I have been watching Doctor Who since 1970 and Jon Pertwee was my first Doctor, but David Tennant is my Doctor,

Tennant casts a long shadow over the modern series in rather the same way Tom Baker did over the classic run. Now I like Tennent’s Doctor a lot, but my own choice for top modern Doctor would be Matt Smith. My favourite of the whole lot is McCoy. Well, at leat when he’s with Ace.

I would say David is my favourite modern era Doctor too. I grew up watching Tom and I love 70′s era DW, but David had the most consistent new era run of the show – when David’s Doctor was on telly he was properly on telly for 13 weeks at a time, and there was 13 weeks worth of speculation, excitement and chit chat to be had. Human Nature, Blink, Utopia, and many more classic stories.

David is my favourite of the modern era: Troughton of the whole history of the show. Both had that mix of light and shade, although DT got more (perhaps sometimes too much!) of an emotional range to play with. I didn’t think I’d like him as much – too good-looking, The Doctor’s not supposed to be that! – but he fit my personal image of the part so well I could overlook that trivial little point.

David was my favorite modern Doctor… until Matt came along. While I still really like David, in the end its down to the choices made by the production teams, and RTD made some choices I was not happy with, while Moffat wiped those away and started fresh with Matt.

While my overall favorite has always been Tom Baker, with McCoy a close second, I do tend to rotate my interest in other Doctors from time to time. I often have a strong affinity for Davison, and right now thanks to the recovered missing episodes, I’m on a Troughton kick.

I think that the writing and production of the show got better when Matt Smith came along, but in my opinion David Tennant is a better Doctor. He’s funny and charming, but also intense and tortured. He does the techno babble better than anyone. And whenever I see his face I feel happy inside.
