The New Doctor Writes…

The latest issue of DWM is packed with photos and information about our brand new Doctor, Peter Capaldi. It also has a special treat: a letter from the newest Doctor himself!

In what can be best described as a “love letter to both DWM and the fans, Capaldi talks about the impact the magazine had on him as young fan, as well as how it prepared him for initial meeting with showrunner Steven Moffat.

“We’re still exploring who he is, but every one of the last 50 years of Doctor Who will have helped make him. And DWM’s meticulous chronicling of those years has already made a contribution. Over the last few months I’ve referred to quite a few of the issues and specials to refocus my inner Who…I’m certain I’ll be returning to the pages of the magazine.”

We’ve already established Capaldi as a passionate fan letter writer, dating back to even age 15! It isn’t a surprise to see his affection for the magazine. It will be interesting, though, to see how his DWM research informs his performance. Do you think being a ”mega-fan” will help or hinder his upcoming portrayal of the Twelfth Doctor?

About the Author

“That’s bacon! Are you trying to poison me?” And from that line on, I’ve been unable to stop watching, reading, musing about the Doctor. As a recent transplant to the Whoniverse, I’ve been trying to soak up as much Who-related knowledge as possible. That journey has taken me from the Tenth Planet to the Fields of Trenzalore and gently set me at the edge of my seat for what’s next. It’s an honor to be here and I plan to bring a unique perspective. I hope you’ll enjoy the journey alongside me.

The man is a true Who fan like all of us reading this article no doubt. The difference is he is also a truly talented professional actor. It is reassuring that he is doing his research (despite already being a fan) – but that is simply what any good actor does upon taking on a role so it is definitely no a hindrance! Bring it on Capaldi!

I don’t think being a mega-fan will hinder him – it didn’t with David Tennant. It will help him to get the nuances – like the First Doctor lapel holding when he was introduced as the new Doctor.

help or hinder? Help, definitely, at least there’ll be no more of those Me-Tab-o-liss 3 blunders!

Surely it was the director’s job to correct that

David Tennant being a mega-fan didn’t stop him from delivering a great performance as the Tenth Doctor. I’m confident Capaldi will do well.
