Jack Lothian’s Series 7 Script Pushed to 2014 Run?

Too expensive! Too impractical! Too unwritten! Whatever the reason, there sadly wasn’t to be an episode of Doctor Who Series 7 with the words ‘written by Jack Lothian’ hovering somewhere in the time vortex.

Well, it appears that episode wasn’t killed by its trip through the metaphorical vortex and, like Captain Jack, it breathes again!

Shameless writer Jack Lothian is penning an episode for Series 8 of Doctor Who,I according to his online CV at literary and talent agency Curtis Brown where the script is currently listed as being ‘in development’.

Needless to say Jack’s CV is mightily impressive; Teachers, No Angels, Death in Paradise, Beaver Falls, Doc Martin, Skins, Outcasts and Ashes to Ashes have all benefitted from his penmanship and now it appears as though he’ll be entering that very exclusive, much coveted school of writers charged with bringing the Doctor to life.

Series 8 is expected to begin airing on BBC One in August 2014.

Everyone has a favourite Doctor and mine - just for his honesty, his fairness and his ability to not notice the Master's awful, awful disguises/anagrams (Sir Gilles Estram!?!) - has to be the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison. The stories didn’t serve him as well as his acting served those stories.

Maybe best not to get too excited – there will be more writers commissioned than ever make it to screen – for example, John Fay had a DW episode on his Agency CV for some time, supposedly for series 7, but it never happened, and is it Tom Macrae who has had an episode bumped back from 7 to 8 due to budget issues? Then there’s the infamous Stephen Fry episode… When they begin filming the episodes, we’ll know who is writing for next year.

I’d like more new writers on the show, it’s always nice to bring fresh perspectives to the show and new ideas. Who knows, one of them could become what Steven Moffat was during the RTD era.

Back on topic, Jack Lothian (great name, by the way) does have an impressive resume, and I think he could be a welcome addition to the Who writing team. I just hope his script gets through in Series 8, and we see Tom McRae make a return at some point.
