Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor is a special one-off live television event on BBC One this Sunday 4th August at 7pm, the next Doctor will be exclusively revealed to the nation.

Almost universally considered to be one of the most hotly contested roles in British television (other than James Bond, there’s nothing like it!), host Zoe Ball will unveil the Twelfth Doctor in the first ever interview in front of a live studio audience set against the backdrop of a swirling vortex, amongst Daleks and the TARDIS.

With a thirty minute run time, the show will include live special guests, past Doctors, companions and celebrity fans.

Crucially, current Doctor Matt Smith and lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat will both give interviews about one of the biggest roles in TV. Says Steven Moffat:

“The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.”

Meamwhile, Charlotte Moore is Controller of BBC:

“BBC One is the home of big live events and this special live show is the perfect way to reveal the identity of the next Doctor and share it with the nation. The Doctor is a truly iconic role and I’m more than excited about the booking.”

Finally, BBC Drama Commissioning Controller Ben Stephenson says:

“We can’t wait to unveil the next Doctor with everyone live on BBC1 on Sunday night. Amongst all the speculation and betting, there has been lots of fun and intrigue at work as we’ve been using the codename Houdini as a decoy! It’s the biggest secret in showbiz, even those working with the new Doctor on other projects at the moment have no idea they are in the presence of the 12th incarnation.”

Crucially, Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will be simulcast live on BBC America! More details about guests will be unveiled over he next couple of days.

So there you have it, dear reader – the Twelfth Doctor’s identity will soon be known…

    Crucial!

  3. Lewis Seymour says:

I think this is a smokescreen. The next Doctor will be revealed to be… Zoe Ball!!!

  4. sw says:

Not showing up in the sky planner yet…. A live reveal, I can’t help but think that given the mystery around this that at the point of saying who it is there will be a technical fault and transmission goes down.. LOL

    • Lewis Seymour says:

Graham Norton will probably talk over the announcement…

  5. Geoff says:

Why Zoe Ball presenting? I know the Tardis can time travel but have we all gone back to 1997 without realising? They’ll be rolling out Andi Peters as thr Doctor next !

  6. Geoff says:

Or Trevor and Simon….which would actually be quite good!

  7. lee moone says:

I’m hoping it’s a ginger Doctor. Sean Harris please! Don’t think Peter Capaldi will be next who as he’s already been in it. I know that’s happened before, but don’t think it will again!

  8. Ian says:

Is this the Elstree event advertised last week?

    • Yes – you going?

  9. Lewis Seymour says:

Slightly off point here, but re the suggestion that the Anniversary special could be simulcast – apparently New Zealand TV has poured cold water on the idea – apart from the fact that the BBC has made no contact with them re it anyway, they operate a ratings system for their telly and DW would be highly unlikely to be allowed to be shown uncut if shown before the evening – it would be something like 11am out there.
