How Does Wes Crusher Know Who the Next Doctor is?

Will the next Doctor be played by a black actor? Will he be a woman? Wil Wheaton – formerly of Star Trek: The Next Generation and a confirmed geek – claims to know.

Chiwetel Ejiofor expressed interest in Doctor Who

In a response to news that actor Chiwetel Ejiofor has been reduced to 7/1 to be the twelfth Doctor Who, Wheaton posted on his Tumblr:

Am I the only person who knows who has been cast as the next Doctor, and who has known this was coming for several weeks? I figured that if it filtered down to me, it must be common knowledge among people who matter.

…now I feel kind of special. Yay me.

Hmm. You were kind of special in Star Trek: TNG too…

But seriously, how does the former Wes Crusher actor know? There are rumours he heard via John “the Flash” Barrowman, but if that’s the case then the Captain Jack actor is being uncharacteristically tight-lipped.
