May’s Big Finish Releases Out Now!

Roll up, roll up, the latest adventures of the Doctor are now available for purchase from Big Finish and in case you’ve forgotten, here are May 2013’s offerings!

The Lady of Mercia

The Fifth Doctor trilogy continues the main range this month with The Lady of Mercia, which finds Tegan taking centre stage in an offering from the wonderful Paul Magrs in another twisting tale:

The Lady of Mercia

Written by Paul Magrs, directed by Ken Bentley

Starring Peter Davison, Janet Fielding, Mark Strickson and Sarah Sutton

The TARDIS brings the Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa to the University of Frodsham, close to where the warrior queen Æthelfrid fought a desperate and bloody rearguard action against the savage Danes. Over a thousand years later, in 1983, battle is still being raged, with student activists taking on savage funding cuts… and disrupting a conference about Æthelfrid convened by history professor John Bleak.

Meanwhile, over in the Physics Department, Dr Philippa Stone is working night and day on a top-secret project – but can her theoretical time machine really be the solution to the university’s problems?

Present and past are about to collide – and the results, as the TARDIS crew is about to discover, will be far from academic!

For the latest Companion Chronicle release, we have a Second Doctor story starring Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury which means we have another spot on Second Doctor performance to look forward to from Hines himself:

The Companion Chronicles: The Apocalypse Mirror

Written by Eddie Robson, directed by Lisa Bowerman

The TARDIS lands in the city of Tromesis on Earth – but it’s a world far from the one that the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe recognise.

The buildings are ruined, the streets deserted. And against the devastation they see a ghostly mirror image of another place – the city as it was before disaster hit.

People vanish here, and huge metal birds attack from the sky.

Can the Doctor find the future, in a place that doesn’t have one?

Last, but definitely not least, we have the welcome return of the Fourth Doctor Adventures.

Phantoms of the Deep

April’s story was released a month early to coincide with Tom Baker, Trevor Baxter and Christopher Benjamin appearing at Big Finish Day 3 in March but now the series gets back to normal:

The Fourth Doctor Adventures: Phantoms of the Deep

Written by Jonathan Morris, directed by Ken Bentley

Starring Tom Baker, Mary Tamm and John Leeson, with Alice Krige

On their mission to explore the Mariana Trench at the very bottom of the ocean, the deepest and most inhospitable place on Earth, the crew of the deep sea vehicle Erebus make an unusual and startling discovery.

A battered blue police box.

As the Doctor, Romana and K9 join them on their journey, the submariners soon discover that the TARDIS is not the only unusual find lurking on the sea floor.

Super-intelligent squid, long-lost submarines and their miraculous occupants are only the start of their troubles. The Goblins are coming. And they won’t let anyone out alive.

All of these stories are available for download now; CD’s will be posted out from today. Visit Big Finish for details on how to make your order.

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!

  1. David says:

The latest BF Fourth Adventure features the beautiful late Mary Tamm as Romana not Leela as you have stated.

    • Well spotted David – unfortunately that’s a quote direct from the Big Finish site… :s

    • Philip Bates says:

Sorry – my fault. When I was editing it, I noticed it said Louise Jameson at the top, but Romana later on. So I just decided to make an ill-informed guess at which one its actually was.

Changing it now – thanks for spotting it. :)
