Everybody Loves Catherine!

The BBC has announced that Donna Noble actress Catherine Tate will be starring in the remake of American sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond (apologies to the few of you that read the first 12 words and thought this was about Doctor Who!).

Tate will appear alongside comedian Lee Mack (BBC’s Not Going Out) in the English version of this comedy.

Usually, it’s the USA that remakes British TV shows (The Office, Coupling, Sherlock, Being Human, Life on Mars, Fawlty Towers, Shameless etc.) but this time, the BBC has taken the baton from the other side of the world. And to be fair to the USA, many of their remakes are exceptionally good in their own right. The Office just finished a hilarious nine year run and for the last two seasons starred Catherine Tate.

The English remake of Everybody Loves Raymond will be called The Smiths and will be set in Cheshire, following a successful sportswriter who lives across the street from his overbearing parents and older brother. Tate especially should help to draw in overseas viewers recognising her from Doctor Who as well as The Office and several big films as well.

The pilot will be filmed on 28th May 2013 in front of a live audience; the scheduled transmission date, if successful, is yet to be announced.

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!

  1. I love Catherine Tate! I love Lee Mack! And ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’. Except I don’t. A truly dire sitcom that I watched stony-faced in wait of a laugh/smile that never came. I hope they’ve re-written a lot of it so that these fine fine performers don’t embarrass themselves with the original material.

And people say Hollywood has lost originality with endless sequels, prequels and remakes. Why not just try to come up with something original? All respect to Catherine Tate of course, because Donna was the definitive Tennant companion.

Someone’s got to be the nitpicker, but US has never remade Sherlock. Elementary uses the “Sherlock Holmes in a modern day” idea as well but it wasn’t intended as a remake… Sherlock is a retelling of the original books, Elementary is a crime procedural with all new stories; they have a very different feel and it was intended to be that way.

As for the actual news… cool, but I have trouble imagining how Everybody Loves Raymond, based on the comedy of Ray Romano, works without Ray Romano being in it. Otherwise it’s just a typical sitcom about shlub with beautiful wife with overbearing mother. That said of course I wish Catherine Tate every success in whatever she’s in.
