A long, long time ago in the late 1980’s, the Cybermen were not all voiced by Nicholas Briggs. Back then, they were played and voiced by many different actors but one chap in particular decided to stay for 4 different appearances as four different Cyberleaders. His name is David Banks.
He coined a catchphrase for the Mondas meanies, announcing the very emotionally delivered word ‘excellent’ when he was pleased and started to give the Cybermen a sense of continuity that they had not had before in the series’ original run. Such was Bank’s passion for the role that he went on to write a book in 1988 about the origins of the Cybermen, or at least the hypothesised origins of the Cybermen; detailed their genesis on the planet Mondas; their need to convert flesh to cybernetics; their travels into the wider universe; and their encounters with the first 7 Doctors.
Some of you may be scratching your head, wondering how this is possible since the Cybermen came from a parallel world, but that’s just one breed of the monsters – as you’ll find out in Nightmare in Silver – these are the originals. This desperate and pathetic race of Cybermen in our Universe committed worse atrocities than their parallel cousins because they chose to become like they are.
And now you can find out about them as well as Banks’ book is being re-mastered and released on CD in May 2013.
The 4-CD release is fully dramatised with new effects and original music to be heard for the first time. It also includes exclusive video interviews with Andrew Skilleter (who drew the artwork for the original book release) and David Banks.
You can pre-order your copy at Amazon for only £13.25, released on 6th May.
