A History of the Cybermen on CD!

A long, long time ago in the late 1980’s, the Cybermen were not all voiced by Nicholas Briggs. Back then, they were played and voiced by many different actors but one chap in particular decided to stay for 4 different appearances as four different Cyberleaders. His name is David Banks.

Cyberman Genesis

He coined a catchphrase for the Mondas meanies, announcing the very emotionally delivered word ‘excellent’ when he was pleased and started to give the Cybermen a sense of continuity that they had not had before in the series’ original run. Such was Bank’s passion for the role that he went on to write a book in 1988 about the origins of the Cybermen, or at least the hypothesised origins of the Cybermen; detailed their genesis on the planet Mondas; their need to convert flesh to cybernetics; their travels into the wider universe; and their encounters with the first 7 Doctors.

Some of you may be scratching your head, wondering how this is possible since the Cybermen came from a parallel world, but that’s just one breed of the monsters – as you’ll find out in Nightmare in Silver - these are the originals. This desperate and pathetic race of Cybermen in our Universe committed worse atrocities than their parallel cousins because they chose to become like they are.

And now you can find out about them as well as Banks’ book is being re-mastered and released on CD in May 2013.

The 4-CD release is fully dramatised with new effects and original music to be heard for the first time. It also includes exclusive video interviews with Andrew Skilleter (who drew the artwork for the original book release) and David Banks.

You can pre-order your copy at Amazon for only £13.25, released on 6th May.

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!

I’m so excited for Nightmare in Silver and the return of the proper Cybermen (i.e. Cybermen who don’t look like Ultraman). I’ve always found them much more frightening than the Daleks–in fact it seems the Daleks gradually became more like them as the original series progressed in that they might convert you into one of them–a far more terrifying prospect than a quick death if you ask me! I’m definitely going to buy this CD. :)

This was the definitive guide to the Cybermen at one time and rare for an actor in classic Who to love his role so much that he developed a real feel for the role and a genuine understanding of what makes the Cybermen tick. I would recommend all Cyberfans to get a copy of this.

The original “Cybermen” book by David banks is one of my favorite DW reference books, and I came across a copy of the ArcHive Tapes online a couple years ago, so I will definitely be ordering this re-master.
