Mark Gatiss Wants More Ice Warriors – So Do We!

The latest Doctor Who Magazine features a preview of the new Ice Warriors episode, Cold War, and writer Mark Gatiss is clearly excited by his rebirth of the classic monsters!

Speaking to DWM, the magazine observes that Gatiss “steeped himself” in the known history of the Ice Warriors, mainly established in throwaway lines, spin-off media and various art books from the 1980s.

There are factions. There’s a peace faction and a war faction… All I knew for certain was that I had to give him an Ice Warrior name. Something Vikingy. Make Skaldak like a Roman general.

Some of the dialogue in Gatiss’ episode refers to intriguing Martian events, clever one-liners that are as memorable as Russell T Davies various mentions of the Time War.

I’d love to do more with them now they’re back… Mars is under-explored in Doctor Who. I want to see the class system, the Phobos Heresy, the Olympian caste, all the things that we’re hinting at in Cold War. I want to see Martian society. Whether it’s 5,000 years ago or 15,000 years in the future, it’s a whole new world to explore.

The Ice Warriors are back where they belong, and I’m thrilled.

So are we, Mr Gatiss – let’s hope that they’re back soon!
