The BBC has announced that Bernard Cribbins and Russell T Davies will once again be working together. But before you get all excited at the prospect of a Wilfred Mott spin off from Doctor Who, take a breath, because the new series the two will be working together on is for CBeebies.
Old Jack’s Boat is a series of stories told by Old Jack, a retired fisherman, who tells tall tales from his boat. The show will be a mixture of live action and animation and will see Old Jack wandering along the seabed, visiting tropical islands and flying high in the air on balloons always accompanied by his faithful dog, Salty. Location scenes were filmed at the North Yorkshire seaside town of Staithes – not too far from Kasterborous Towers!
Cribbins, or Grandad in Doctor Who as the BBC media release bizarrely called his other character, will not only have two of the episodes written by Russell T Davies but will also be working with Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones) in some capacity on Old Jack’s Boat as well. Cribbins is very excited about returning to storytelling for children’s BBC, some of you may even be old enough to remember his wonderful tales from Jackanory, but this new venture has relit his passion for tale telling:
I am delighted to be back on CBeebies telling stories as I am storyteller. There are some marvellous writers, such as Russell T Davies, who I have been in touch with for a long time and who, of course, I worked with on Doctor Who. I am looking forward to sitting back and being able to tell some wonderful stories.
Davies was also thrilled to be working on the project, if not a little nervous about the gig:
It’s exciting new territory for me, writing for this age range. But this is the age when your imagination first starts! And when the call came from Bernard, asking me on board, I couldn’t refuse – I’d do anything for that man!
We’re sure that Davies has nothing to worry about, this is the man who has entertained millions for years with show such as Children’s Ward, Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Wizards vs Aliens, he’s wowed children with his fantastic stories and we’re sure this will be no different!
Old Jack’s Boat commences on CBeebies on Monday 21st January at 5.40pm, running for 25 episodes. The episode scheduled for Friday, 25th January is written by Russell T Davies.
