Moffat: TARDIS Is “actually a machine”

An alien space-time ship that is bigger on the inside is bound to be a bit scare, right? Could it be that Steven Moffat’s decision to redesign the time machine’s interior is based on something more than 1960s nostalgia?

The Eleventh Doctor's new TARDIS interior design revealed!

Speaking at a recent press screening of The Snowmen, Steven Moffat revealed his thoughts about the redesigned TARDIS interior, set to be revealed in the Doctor Who Christmas special

I thought we’d been getting progressively whimsical with the interior of the TARDIS.

I started to think, ‘Well, why is that? It’s not a magical place. It’s actually a machine’. And actually potentially, as you’ll see more spectacularly later, quite a scary place sometimes. We make a lot of use of that.

We sure that you, like us, can’t wait to see the full interior on your TVs, particularly the 360° shot – one for watching on the BBC One HD channel, we reckon!

  1. With all due respect, the Tardis is not just a machine. I think that’s been pretty much established. I much prefer the idea of the Tardis being something more than merely mechanical and electronic, but something living and intelligent in its own way. It’s in that wibbly-wobbly, machiney-weeney place that the Tardis can be really interesting. It is, after all, the Doctor’s longest abiding companion.

To be fair, the Grand Moff doesn’t say ‘just’ a machine, he says ‘actually’, and he’s right – the TARDIS is a machine. It happens also to have something more about it, something almost conscious and sentient, which is very much the product of its Time Lord origins. So yes, a machine, but more than that as well. Blimey, there’s no other show like Doctor Who, is there?! :)

I presume “And actually potentially, as you’ll see more spectacularly later, quite a scary place sometimes,” refers to the ‘Journey to the Center of the TARDIS’ story later in the season. I’m interested to see where this goes, because it reminds me of what the Fifth Doctor said in Castrovalva, that the closer you get to the heart of the TARDIS, the more dangerous it can get.
