Just who is Samuel Irvine, and just why has he been cast in Doctor Who Series 7? Well, we reckon the latter answer is primarily because he was the best choice for the role of a small boy – the first answer, however, seems to be because he is Scottish.

According to the Daily Record, young Master Irvine is from Cumbernauld near Glasgow, and has been cast following a short video audition in his parents’ kitchen.
Kerimeh is his proud mum:
He is also with an agency who tipped us off that Doctor Who had been in touch looking for a Scottish boy to play a part.We received a few lines from them – what they wanted for the audition. Samuel made a showreel with us in the kitchen on our iPad.
We filmed him reading the lines, with his dad and I playing the other parts. It was filmed in Wales and was a great experience.
Sonia Scott is from the All Talent agency:
Now what is significant is that the role is specifically for a Scottish boy. Samuel Irvine plays a messenger, and while we don’t know whether the attire in the accompanying photo is in any way related to the role, who sends small boys as messengers in the 21st century?
