Room at the Top

Room with a View?

Jenna-Louise Coleman, the Doctor’s new companion, has caused quite a stir after appearing topless in BBC4’s adaptation of Room at the Top.

In the story based on the book by John Braine, Jenna plays Susan Brown, who is seduced by protagonist, Joe Lampton (Matthew McNulty), in order for him to climb the social ladder. The drama has been described as ’90 per cent sex,’ and features a scene in which Brown loses her virginity to Lampton. Coleman has said that Room at the Top is about:

class, love, lust, sex, ambition, control and money…

…and it featured her appearing semi-nude, something which certain sections of the press have got themselves excited about. The drama was originally due to air in April 2011, but the two hour-long episodes were pulled from the schedule over a dispute about broadcasting rights. It’s the first adaptation since an X-rated movie in 1959, despite the novel’s popularity.

Of course, it’s not the first time people associated with Doctor Who have stunned viewers, with Matt Smith appearing opposite Billie Piper (Rose) in Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and Katy Manning stripping off next to a Dalek. As you do.

Jenna shocked fans when she appeared unexpectedly in Asylum of the Daleks as Oswin Oswald, and she’ll return at Christmas as the Doctor’s new companion – despite being a dead Dalek. She’s already won a poll conducted by The Sun, proclaiming her to be Doctor Who’s sexiest ever companion, with a huge 50% of votes. Karen Gillan’s Amy Pond (who left the series in Saturday’s The Angels Take Manhattan) came second, with a considerable 30% of the vote.
