Big Finish put their best foot forward in November 2012 with Return of the Rocket Men, a sequel to 2011’s The Rocket Men by John Dorney.
But this time, writer Matt Fitton has moved the story forward by a few years and replaced heroic teacher Ian Chesterton with heroic pilot Steven Taylor.
Directed by Lisa Bowerman, the story finds the TARDIS crew in familiar circumstances:
Once before the Doctor battled the sadistic Rocket Men and once before he won. But when the dreaded pirates of the skies raid a remote frontier planet, he’s not the only member of the TARDIS crew for whom they are old enemies.
Steven Taylor knows them well. Back in his days as a pilot, on his twenty first birthday, Steven’s ship was brought down by the malevolent Van Cleef. He barely escaped with his life. And now he’s going to have to go through that again.
But this time round, he knows what happens. And he knows there’s no way out. Steven Taylor has to make a choice. A choice where either way… he loses.
Return of the Rocket Men features performances by Peter Purves and Tim Treloar and can be pre ordered on CD for £8.99 or via download for £7.99 from www.bigfinish.com.

Interesting and rather a surprise given while the Rocket Men was a great BF – as much for its structure and delivery as content, it was really a very close homage to Rocket Men from other stories, so surprised they’re returned. Not disappointed though – good pirate characters and Peter Purves is a solid narrator/actor – so I might consider a purchase on this!
