There have been rumours that Matt Smith may be handing in the keys to the TARDIS soon. One red top tabloid newspaper recently ran an article with the strap line “I QUIT” next to a picture of Matt Smith dressed as the Doctor, panicked fans (and indeed the entire Kasterborous team) breathed a sigh of relief upon reading the article to discover that the quote was a complete red herring and no such statement had been made.
Thank goodness, really, as Matt Smith is brilliant as the Doctor.
In fact, speaking with the Radio Times recently, the actor confirmed that he was enjoying the work that Doctor Who provides for him and has no immediate plans to leave the role of the Doctor just yet.
In a powerful statement, the actor went on to say:
Matt has confirmed that he’ll be filming new episodes next year as well as the specials for the fiftieth anniversary that we’re all drooling over (or is that just the team at Kasterborous? We’ve all had to start wearing wellies to work!) and after that who knows? He may stay; he may go, let’s just take a leaf out of his book and enjoy the moment of the Eleventh Doctor while he’s still going strong!

It’s odd but even though he’s in the midst of his third series already, it doesn’t seem like he’s been the Doctor all that long. It *seems* like he’s just getting started. I’m very happy that he’ll have done 3 series and an anniversary special—everyone should be thankful of that. You never know when an actor will pull an “Eccleston”. If Matt quits after the 50th, so be it and I wish him all the best but I do kind of hope he stays and does that 4th year…or more. The more the better. He’s easily the best Doctor since Tom Baker, with the same kind of magic.
I have really come to love Mr. Smith as the doctor. I am glad to see they are letting him use his natural “strangeness” to enhance the character so much.
I’m loving the ride.
