A Red Dwarf/Doctor Who Crossover?

Could there be a Red Dwarf/Doctor Who crossover?Red Dwarf is coming back to television for a tenth series. You may not know it, you may not have even been more than a baby when the last full series aired but if there’s one thing you should know about it, it’s this: it’s hilarious.

It’s a science fiction comedy like no other, incredibly funny, at times very moving and never afraid to completely shake up the format of the show (there was never a series nine, it was only mentioned in the metatextual Back To Earth special in 2009).

Avid readers of Doctor Who Magazine may have seen the recent advertorial out-of-place feature that devoted a whole page to an interview with the Boys From The Dwarf, who all came out as fans of Doctor Who and actually seemed to know their stuff rather than having vague ideas of the show.

As two of the BBC’s most successful and most popular shows, Red Dwarf and Doctor Who have always had a bit of a link, mainly due to their sci-fi elements but also in part to do with the loyal fan base that they both generate. So it’s interesting to read that the Dwarf boys would like to get a fleeting trip onto the TARDIS to meet one of the Doctors but not just any old one:

Craig Charles: I think it’d be great if, for one scene, we could be beaming somewhere and suddenly we’d be on the Tardis [sic] with the Doctor…then we could shake our heads, say ‘nah’ and just beam back out again.

Danny John-Jules: I think Doug Naylor should write in one of the old Doctors. Sylvester McCoy or someone. And then we could have an episode with one of those guys in it. It would be funny.

So what would you lot like to see? Would a surprise visit from Dave Lister and the Cat be a welcome thing in Doctor Who and Red Dwarf or would it be a cheeky reference too far?

Red Dwarf returns to Dave on October 4th at 9pm with Trojan.

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!

Just to say I doubt it was an advertorial. Advertorial means that a company has paid for the space and a magazine would have to declare that with a sub-head.

Looked like plain old editorial to me…

Anyway, years ago there was a April Fools joke in Celestial Toyroom that said Ace and the Doctor were going to appear in an episode of Red Dwarf called Relative Dimensions. A lot of people were fooled at the time.

  2. Cavan you’re absolutely right – this editor’s bleary eyes missed that misdescription, although I can appreciate totally where Mez is coming from…

Just wanted to say that i love both shows and can’t wait for Trojan to air. A cannonical cross-over would of course be a bit too far fetched but why not for a wee sketch for Children In Need or Comic Relief? That would be superb! If EastEnders can do it, why not Red Dwarf?

I would love to see such a thing! But new Dwarf is a DaveTV thing, NuWho is BBC,,,,,, but maybe,,, for a good comic relief thing, it would be wonderful.

Maybe some amateur video producer could make this happen :)

  5. Thing about Doctor Who is, The Doctor usually fixes things. If there actually was a straight up Doctor Who/Red Dwarf crossover it would be VERY weird if The Doctor didn’t just haul the ship back to our solar system similar to how he hauled hundreds of planets in Journey’s End kinda ending the series right then and there.
