Red Dwarf is coming back to television for a tenth series. You may not know it, you may not have even been more than a baby when the last full series aired but if there’s one thing you should know about it, it’s this: it’s hilarious.
It’s a science fiction comedy like no other, incredibly funny, at times very moving and never afraid to completely shake up the format of the show (there was never a series nine, it was only mentioned in the metatextual Back To Earth special in 2009).
Avid readers of Doctor Who Magazine may have seen the recent
advertorial out-of-place feature that devoted a whole page to an interview with the Boys From The Dwarf, who all came out as fans of Doctor Who and actually seemed to know their stuff rather than having vague ideas of the show.
As two of the BBC’s most successful and most popular shows, Red Dwarf and Doctor Who have always had a bit of a link, mainly due to their sci-fi elements but also in part to do with the loyal fan base that they both generate. So it’s interesting to read that the Dwarf boys would like to get a fleeting trip onto the TARDIS to meet one of the Doctors but not just any old one:
Craig Charles: I think it’d be great if, for one scene, we could be beaming somewhere and suddenly we’d be on the Tardis [sic] with the Doctor…then we could shake our heads, say ‘nah’ and just beam back out again.
Danny John-Jules: I think Doug Naylor should write in one of the old Doctors. Sylvester McCoy or someone. And then we could have an episode with one of those guys in it. It would be funny.
So what would you lot like to see? Would a surprise visit from Dave Lister and the Cat be a welcome thing in Doctor Who and Red Dwarf or would it be a cheeky reference too far?
Red Dwarf returns to Dave on October 4th at 9pm with Trojan.
