Laying Down Tracks with Dizzee Rascal!

The Doctor Grooves to Dizzee Rascal

Just in case you’ve been missing it so far, the official BBC Doctor Who website has been running a miniseries in the build up to Doctor Who, the first episode called Pond Life, which sees Amy and Rory getting disturbed at their house as the Doctor’s adventures unfold around them.

We’ll have the third installment for you in a little while.

Monday’s episode, written by Chris Chibnall, got the series off to a cracking start as the Doctor left Rory and Amy an answer phone message regarding his run in with a group of Sontarans, an encounter with Mata Hari and his experience of laying down a vocal backing track on a Dizzee Rascal song, which may well be one of the funniest and one of the cutest things that the Doctor has ever done.

(For those older fans, Dizzee Rascal is a popular “rapper2 with a couple of number ones on the Hit Parade to his credit.)

The series will continue throughout the week in the build up to the start of series seven with Saturday’s episode Asylum of the Daleks. For those of you that were fans of the Series 6 DVD and Blu-ray extra Night and the Doctor, this gem of a series is a must see!

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!

I’m sorry but laying down a backing track for dizzee rascal is not one of the funniest and cutest things we’ve seen the Doctor do – it’s one of the most pathetic! So far the Pond Life series has been pants – more like Stagnant Pond Life!

Couldn’t agree more! As much as i am looking forward to the new series, the first Pond Life minisode left me empty. Seriously, laying backing tracks for a rapper. Can you imagine William Hartnell doing that? Actually, in a weird way that sounds like a lot of fun. But seriously, wasn’t it Mr Chibnall that went on to national TV during The Trial Of A Time Lord to put down Pip And Jane Baker? His track record leaves a lot to be desired (Cybewoman, 42, Hungry Earth/Cold Blood) and makes him appear as a hypocrite. Don’t get me wrong, the guy has wrote amazing episodes (Adrift from Torchwood series two is a particular highlight of mine)!

Couldn’t imagine William Hartnell doing it. Couldn’t imagine Hartnell going into a nightclub, either – but he did that.

Must admit the rapping bit did jar a little, but hey.. he’s the Doctor. He does everything, eventually.

something to keep in mind here… Each incarnation is unique. True, I can’t see the First Doctor doing this, but this is the Eleventh. This incarnation is the old man trying desperately to be “cool” and being rather hapless at it in the pop culture sense, bowties – fezzes – spacesuits – and now rap track vocals. It’s what Eleven does, and more than likely Twelve will be appalled by it much as Nine would likely be appalled by Six’s attire.
