Speaking at the MediaGuardian-sponsored Edinburgh International Television Festival, Steven Moffat has claimed that Doctor Who could “outlive everyone”!
(Well, duh, he’s a Time Lord…)
As part of the preview screening of Asylum of the Daleks at the event yesterday, Moffat – without stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan and colleague Caro Skinner – claimed that the new series would be a “blockbuster every single week” – and that it’s ability for reinvention could see it last many, many years.
If you’re cynical, perhaps picture the show as Moffat describes, and all of the spinoff media of books, comics and audios and smaller craft, able to rebuild the mothership should the worst happen – just as it did in 1989. The rebuild might not be instantaneous, but unless the auditorium was packed purely with octogenarians, you can see how he might be right. Like Sherlock Holmes or Batman, Doctor Who can just keep running!
There’s a lot more to come from the event, so stay tuned…
