Another Clue to an August 25th Series 7 Launch?

It’s only natural that speculation about the air date of Asylum of the Daleks is everywhere. Firstly, there’s always a huge amount of apprehension when a new series hits screens because, y’know, it’s Doctor Who. It’s also been almost eight months since the last episode, The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.

But we’ve been teased so much. Too much, maybe. We’ve had a killer trailer – actually, two killer trailers that’ve offered glimpses of Daleks, Cyborgs and Velociraptors. Doctor Who Magazine has been postponed for one week, apparently due to printing issues, and nothing to do with the launch date. And there’s going to be a special screening of said episode at the BFI.

Similar to previous years, most people think Asylum will be shown at a Bank Holiday – and the next one’s on the 25th August. That’s just over ten days away.

The BBC highlights don’t feature anything special for that Saturday at all, and we’ve heard nothing official. So should we get our hopes up…?

Well, The Washington Post has offered us a glimmer in their Going Out guide. Listed under ‘Movies – Coming Soon’ is BBC America: Doctor Who. Release date: 25th August.

If this year is anything like the last, BBC America will show Doctor Who on the same night as BBC One – so hope is still alive. As a further teaser, BBC America is screening special shows in the run-up to the new series.

Of course, Doctor Who is set to return in the Autumn, and that doesn’t really start until September. So will we see the Doctor, Amy and Rory back on our screens on 25th August? Your guess is as good as mine.

At the very least, it looks as if we’ll see the TARDIS back within the next month. That’s all that really matters.

It’s less than two weeks til August 25th! Doesn’t this hurt the show–I mean, shouldn’t the BBC have been hyping this for weeks that August 25th (or whatever it may be) is the start of the new episodes??? I can’t believe they’ve waited this long to set a date.

  2. avatar Russell says:

I’m afraid this is incorrect; on the BBC America website, they’ve got “The Destinations of Doctor Who” on at 9:00 EDT on the 25th, which is when they show new episodes of Doctor Who. It’ll probably be the week after, on September 1st.

  3. avatar Jenny says:

BBC America has posted their schedule for August 25th. ( It shows “The Destinations of Doctor Who” at 9 p.m. Eastern followed by a repeat of “Copper” at 10 p.m. and a repeat of “The Timey-Wimey of Doctor Who” at 11 p.m.

I would be thrilled to have Series 7 start on the 25th in the U.S., but unless they change the schedule, it will probably be September 1st (which makes sense, as I believe that “The Destinations of Doctor Who” will be the last of the new specials BBC America is currently showing.)

  4. avatar Iltu says:

I think it might be the first of September, because Asylum of the Daleks is not on the schedule of BBC america for August 25th.

The BBC have never known what to do with a hot potato have they! Look at Torchwood last year, could they be bothered? We were virtually the last country in the world to see it despite it having originated here! The BBC are a law unto themselves! Time for them to go commercial and see if they can survive without our life blood I say!

  6. avatar Ollz says:

Even though it’s not on the 25th in America doesn’t mean that here in the UK we get it a week before you, although your logic is more likely and I’m just clinging on to that last bit of hope!

  7. avatar AndrewDB says:

In the US and Canada, the first weekend in September is a bank holiday.
    Just saying….

  8. avatar Mark O'Driscoll says:

I think a lot of fans forget that though we know that Doctor Who is the greatest series ever, the BBC don’t share this opinion.
The BBC appreciates it and know’s it’s the biggest merchandise raising show they have. But they treat it like every other programme they produce when it comes to schedule.
They will release the broadcast time and date approxiamately five days before the Radio Times magazine is printed.
Even thought the Radio Times is not produced in house they still use it almost as in house, giving it exclussive interviews and access to lots of BBC programmes.
And as it’s getting near to the Radio Times issue production for the 25th August weekend, then we can say that unless there is an annoucement in the next two days, it won’t be broadcast on that date.

The official launch of series seven of Doctor Who IS DEFINITELY September 1st in the UK and US. The launch date for Australia is September 8th. Lock those dates into your calendars and get ready for the ride of your lives =D

  10. avatar Ian says:

Just checked the Radio times for next week and no mention of Dr Who for the following issue . So maybe 1st September.

    • Indeed, September is (thankfully – hey, why not hold off until October, please?) looking more likely :)

  11. avatar Philip Bates says:

Sorry, folks. More details were added to that schedule after this article was written, so while it initially looked like DW could come back on 25th, it’s since become clear that this is just the “Destinations” thing. Apologies. It’s the consequence of being on the cutting-edge of news… :P

    Still, September’s pretty good!

  12. avatar DaveB says:

I still think August 25th is possible. I’m assuming the Beeb will try to squeeze in the new series of Merlin which they usually do before Xmas.

  13. avatar Ian says:

Merlin according to Danny Cohen controller of BBC 1 said Merlin would start the day Dr who finishes. Also Edward Russell brand manager of Dr who said announcements are made ten 10 days before.

    • avatar TonyS says:

Which for a 25th August start would be tomorrow. The Chinese would hate this- we live in interesting times!

  14. avatar Theta Sigma says:

I must say, when I heard Steven Moffat say that those ugly “new Daleks” would just be an “officer class”, and that the RTD ones would still be in action, I just thought he was pumping out horse manure to satisfy us angry fanboys. Then I saw the trailer, ad I went “HECK YEAH!”

Really, if they could just remove those enormous bums from the new models and tone down their colours, they’d actually look pretty good. But they didn’t, so….

  15. avatar Dave says:

If Danny Cohen is right, that would take a run of 13 episodes of Merlin up to New Year. So, maybe 1st September is the date!
