More Than One Anniversary Special?

Fiftieth anniversary speculation has been upgraded from the amber ‘rumour’ to the equally vague but more encouraging magenta ‘suggestion’ as Matt Smith hinted at the possibility of multiple specials to be aired according to Bleeding Cool.

Matt Smith as the DoctorIn this month’s Doctor Who Magazine Matt Smith commented that he had been told the idea for Steven Moffat’s ‘first’ anniversary special (the episode itself is unwritten) suggesting that, yes indeed, there may be more than one.

Matt described the idea as:

“As brilliant and as mental as you’d expect from Steven”.

Teasing us further Smith added that while Moffat was on a pitching roll he also shared his plans for Series 8, offering the Eleventh Doctor this question/challenge:

“Are you ready to cry?”

So is this a magenta suggestion that Smith will be departing after the second half of Series 7 and an undisclosed number of specials due to hit our screens in 2013?

Everyone has a favourite Doctor and mine - just for his honesty, his fairness and his ability to not notice the Master's awful, awful disguises/anagrams (Sir Gilles Estram!?!) - has to be the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison. The stories didn’t serve him as well as his acting served those stories.

If Moffat’s discussing Series 8 with Smith I would hope that means he’ll be involved. I don’t particularly want Smith to leave just yet, he’s doing so well in the role.

I do think “magenta suggestion” is a wonderful phrase though. It could be a good title for a 1970s Cold War-style spy thriller. Michael Caine in “The Magenta Suggestion”..

Its always seemed like Matts going to do three years. It just seems so short and to paraphrase the Tenth Doctor ” He could do so much more”

I think hes made comments about hitting 30 as The Doctor…thats why its in my mind he will only do three years.

Its partly because of the split season…it just seems to be short spurts.

And he has been so much better than anyone expected, thats the thing.

When he hit Doctor Who Confidential that January day with big hair and wavy hands, i thought ooh he could be good…but hes been better than that hes been fantastic!

If we are going to get a regenertion next year(and I really hope that we do not), please let’s have it as an event in itself rather than as an adjunct to the 50th anniversary celebrations.
