We all know that the Doctor Who Lenticular Chess Set is awful – plastic, cheap and thrown together with little or no care for the licence – but is it a hundred times worse than the 1994 Classic Danbury Mint Pewter Set – a mahogany, and rare metalled wonder?
According to the eBay listing by “Future World” you could take home the classic pewter Chess set at £799.00 while another listing for the lenticular chess set prices the abomination at a hundredth the price at £7.99.
Produced by Danbury Mint in 1994 this chess set comprises of mahogany type board, lid, container, and an information booklet in original cellophane wrapper.
But what elevates the set above all others are the Pewter playing pieces of the characters from Doctor Who which take on the various titles of the chess board including:
The Goodies:
- The Doctor from the 1st through to the 7th (King)
- Leela (Queen)
- Kamelion & The Brigadier (Bishops)
- James McCrimmon & Adric (Knights)
- Tardis (Rook) x 2
- K9 (Pawn) x 8
The Baddies:
- The Master (King)
- The Rani (Queen)
- Cyberman and Draconian (Bishops)
- Ice Warrior & Sea Devil (Knights)
- Sontaran (Rook) x 2
- Dalek (Pawn) x 8
Owing to the fact that it has been a display piece the set is in excellent condition and comes with the original foam coverings for the pewter figures.
For the full terms and conditions for this rare and beautiful set see see Future World’s eBay listing.

Adric as a knight and Chameleon as a bishop? I question these choices as an anal retentive fanboy. Granted, it would be tough to regulate what goes where—Daleks as pawns? But it’s definitely the finest choice out there. I’m kind of surprised that they haven’t produced a quality updated one. Maybe for the 50th?
