News coming from the Doctor Who Convention may say that Matt Smith doesn’t plan to leave the role in the foreseeable future – however it might be easier to say that Matt Smith just doesn’t ‘plan’ at all.
The Eleventh Doctor has for a long time been sitting on the fence regarding his career options and in an interview with The Huffington Post Matt attempted to clarify his position offering these thoughts on what weighs most on his decision:
“I mean, look , We’ve got the [50th] Anniversary coming up, there’s another Christmas special to shoot, we’ve another season with our new companion coming in, there’s a lot to be getting on with before I leave, so I’m here for the foreseeable future.”
Does this confirm some speculation that he would depart at the end of this mammoth production year for Doctor Who? We’re not sure, but given that the big five-oh will come pre-loaded with all the accoutrements of that other life of the Doctor – the media attention and the constant oppressive filming schedule that comes with being an actor and an ambassador for the show – it wouldn’t be a surprise.
Someone who just feels lucky that they’ve managed to hold on to him is Steven Moffat who may or may not know (this is Moffat after all) that Matt is still undecided about his future:
“The honest truth is, we don’t know. We’ll keep him as long as we can, that’s the absolute truth.”
Of course (two words into which I’m placing a lot of hope) this could all just be a ruse for a what would be the absolutely stunning début of the Twelfth Doctor at the conclusion to the anniversary celebrations.
Either way there’s a lot of time between now and when Matt does decide to leave…
