There were some amazing sights at this years Gallifrey One convention – the 23rd annual North American celebration of all things Who based – but none were more amazing than the 1996 TV Movie TARDIS console, lovingly refurbished and reunited with the cast members Eric Roberts, Eliza Roberts Daphne Ashbrook, Paul McGann and producer Philip Segal.
Once again Paul McGann, aided by his eight year-old son, was able to fly his Type 40 TARDIS (albeit, staying very much confined to the Marriott’s lobby) thanks to the restoration work of writer/producer Paul J. Salamoff and friends.
Despite owning the prop for over five years Salamoff very much wanted the newly restored console to be interactive – speaking to LA Weekly:
“I’ve always been very open about letting Doctor Who fans come and see it. I knew what it meant to own a piece of history like this.”
Amongst the new bells and whistles fitted to the console are a recreation of the Doctors bag used to house a replica of his Sonic Screwdriver (fashioned from a remote control) and sound effect clips of the Eighth Doctor himself.
Salamoff has yet to confirm whether the prop will feature at any conventions in the future. However thanks to tips left by fans who queued to be pictured with it Salamoff can start to work on the pieces most eye catching feature, the Time Rotor.
I’m sure they’ll be plenty of fans who would love to pay to see the old girl breath again.
