A lot of actors that take on the esteemed role of the Doctor either have a large bulk of experience behind them already or make more opportunities in other acting roles once they leave the show.
Matt Smith however has a different idea of what he would like to do in the future. Speaking about possible career moves after Doctor Who, the actor commented that he would like to make the transition into directing.
Talking to the Guardian, Smith stated that he was already talking to play writer Simon Stephens (creator of On The Shore Of The Wide World which featured Smith in 2005) about a specific project but would have to find a window due to the fact that his “filming commitments take up so long”.
But fear not all you fans of Matt Smith, this doesn’t mean that the actor is wrapping up on his tenure as the Eleventh Doctor, in fact as filming is about to begin on the seventh series, he seems happier than ever to be involved with the show:
“I’m looking forward to it…I love making it.”
The actor has already seen a number of the scripts for the new series and is suitably impressed, especially by a mystery bit of guest casting that he remains ambiguous about:
“I couldn’t possibly tell you, but it’s exciting. You’ll know him…or her.”
Things are looking healthy for the Eleventh Doctor and for Matt Smith as well. You never know, he could end up directing an episode of Doctor Who itself at some point in the future!
