Doctor Who News Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover

Doctor Who/Star Trek crossoverAs regular readers will know, the Cybermen will meet the Borg in IDW’s DoctorWho/Star Trek: The Next Generation crossover this May.

In the 8-issue series, now confirmed as Assimilation2, the Doctor, Amy and Rory will meet Captain Jean-Luc Picard on the USS Enterprise.

The two races were perhaps the most logical enemies to appear in the comic, written by Scott and David Tipton and regular Doctor Who comic scribe, Tony Lee, with art by J.K. Woodward. Some may even call the Borgs a bit of a Cyber-rip-off, with both forcing cybernetic advancement upon their victims in order to achieve perfection. Resistance will be deleted. Or whatever the Borg do (“assimilated” – Ed).

BBC Executive Vice President of Home Entertainment and Licensing, Soumya Sriraman said:

“We’re excited by this new adventure for the Doctor and the fact he will be travelling with Jean-Luc Picard and his iconic crew. This makes the perfect partnership for not only for Doctor Who’s incredible fans, but also for the brand, as we have just celebrated our most successful year yet. Doctor Who’s latest series delivered record ratings on BBC America, and the most downloaded TV season in the US on iTunes.”

Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea…?

As with anything, if the writing and art is great, it’ll be great. If not…ah well.

I’m sure they would have gone with Daleks of they had the rights but Cybermen and the Borg are a bit too similar anyway. I’d prefer the Sontarans. For that matter, I’d prefer the original series Trek crew or even DS9 before Next Gen.

I sometimes think that Who has missed a trick with the Cybermen.
They should or could be as scary as the Borg, but alas they are not.

Especially in recent years when they seem to have been a bit of a joke really.

Putting them alongside the Borg here is interesting. I don’t think the Cybermen would last five minutes in their presence.

There’s a popular opinion that the Cybermen wouldn’t last two seconds against the Borg. It’s all in the writing. In the Whoniverse, they’re the second most powerful empire in the cosmos but they have the misfortune of running into the Doctor. the Borg would fare just as badly but in the Trek Universe, they started out so unstoppable, and they indeed were NOT stopped, which was great writing and an excellent first step in creating a credible threat.

This crossover may be the best thing ever for the Cybermen as with an event like this, neither side wants their properties to come out badly so we may see some heavy powerplays by our metal guys. In any given match up, any side could win depending on who’s writing, etc. this is a chance for the Cybermen to gain back some cred.

What about the Borg in Voyager? They’re crap.
